So my baby Button chicks are now just over 3 weeks old. They have all their feathers, and I am wondering if it is ok to remove the heat lamp. I have raised it up as far as it would go over time, but it insists on keeping the brooder at 85 degrees, which I know they don't need. They are now in a room with my other birds, and it stays pretty warm in there. The temp in that room is probably about 75 easily. I don't want to switch the bulb to lower the heat, because it would be a white bulb and I don't want them to start pecking. We are in the process of building their cages, and hope to move them into the cages in the next week or so. I really am thinking that it would be ok at this point to remove the heat, but just looking for some reassurance I guess.....

3 weeks? Buttons? i wouldnt try that..

I don't think I will try it.... I think I will go ahead and switch the bulb to a regular 60 watt bulb (white unfortunately) and raise it to where the temp is about 80ish. I will just have to keep an eye out for any pecking that could happen.

Just changed out the bulb when I was giving them fresh shavings, food & water. The current temp is about 80 degrees, so I will go back in a little bit and see if I need to raise or lower the light.
My only concern is that the light will be on 24/7 and disturb the other birds. I will probably have to move them back into the laundry room. We had moved them out temporarily while we installed a washer and dryer recently.

You can make your own colored bulbs by lightly spray painting them blue or red, I'v done it several times. Got idea off BYC.......
