Hello! I am new to the world of chickens and need some advise on how to design my coop/run. Our barn lean-to previously had a run built in but we plan on tearing the existing one out since it’s not secure(as well as the trash and all) and building a new one. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would like to utilize this whole space but don’t know where to put the coop, etc. we already have the nesting boxes on the back left wall.

I think Percheron chick is on to something... First of all, welcome to BYC! We are glad you are here. :D Where are you at in this big world? I see green grass, so cant be that cold. What I have found is my chickens want all the space I give them and then want more. They are not impressed with anything that I took the time to do and I did change somethings as we evolved... I got more practical. Check out the coop builds on this site and take what you like and leave the rest, there are some very clever people. Good to learn from, also the thread of "biggest mistakes" i think. Hindsight is 20/20. Make the door so you don't have to slouch, make it easy to clean, give yourself a poop board under their roost and don't make your nesting boxes too high because you will have to make your roost higher and chickens don't like to work that hard at getting up to them. And don't put your feeders or waters under your roost... cuz yuck. Looks like a fun project and congratulations on the new chicken family. I have only been doing this for a little over 1 year and it is a blast. Played with my coop for about 3-6 months, now expanding my run. No regrets... Ok. Wish I would have given them more room and gotten more chickens from the start. Chickens are awesome and I hope you enjoy your flock. Aloha, L.

Hello! Welcome to BYC!! :frow

Good luck on your new adventure! Have you checked out coop builds on this site? Depending on where you are and which way there building is situated, it could work great with a wire front.

Feel free to check out the links below for some interesting reading.

Looks like a great space!
Lots of potential there.
Might not need all those nests.....especially the higher ones.
And do I see a couple of ladder roosts in the back and on the right?

Knowing more about your goals for having chickens would help us advise you....

Oh, and, Welcome to BYC!
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.

Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!
