Replacing chick?

Hello,
I'm brand new to this site. My daughters and I have been raising chicks for the first time...they are now 4 weeks old. One died today. It was extremely sad for my 6 year old daughter. It was a Buff Orpington, named Goldie! We have another Buff, 3 Black Australorps, and 2 Speckled Sussex. They are all very healthy. It was an unfortunate accident that happened. I wanted to know if we could get another Buff chick. I know you need to be careful introducing another chicken to the flock. But if it's close in age, wondering how that would work? Could we keep it separate for awhile and then introduce? We still have the 4 week old chicks in a brooder. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks!

Hi && Welcome!!!

You should keep it seperate for a little while, but being that they're still little introducing them right away might work. I know I introduced my 4 week old to my 4 day olds and my 4 week took to them very well.
Definitely, if you can, keep the new one sep. for awhile just to insure it's health and all the chicken's safety!

Thanks, that's very helpful...and encouraging! I found a farm who has more 4 week old Buffs. So they will be the same age. But I'll try to keep the new one separate initially and let them get used to each other while we let them outside each day. If the new hen is used to being with others, will she be lonely at first? I know if one of our chicks is outside and can't find the others or if we leave one in the brooder, they do not like it at all! Maybe we should get 2 new ones :)

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Keep the new chick in a separate brooder with one of the chicks you already have until they have become used to each other (1-2 days) then introduce them both back to the others.

And I agree keep it seperate for a while and it should introduce fine...just keep a watchful eye on it.

Thanks for all the advice. We got our new Buff orp. chick today. She looks just about the same age as the others and very gentle. I've got her in a separate brooder. How long should I keep her separate? What signs should I look for? She was fed medicated feed just as mine are. I was thinking of letting her and the rest of the chicks play outside a bit everyday to get used to each other. Is that not a good idea?

I Like to put a new chick in for a few minutes watch any trouble take it out I stand over and watch then add a longer time watch a little longer watch .. until I feel they are going to ccept her no real fighting
