Hey all. I have a little GLW that laid a liquid mess in the nest yesterday. I didn't know who it was till I saw one acting off today, lethargic, not eating, tail low, sitting in the corner looking sick. She pooped mostly white/yellowish liquid. I had production reds for years, I'm no stranger to the reproductive issues, unfortunately & I don't have any doubts about what this is.

So I caught her (no easy task, she's quick even when sick) & gave her a calcium & a couple drops of nutridrench & let her go. I'm thinking I might try some antibiotics but I'm not sure which one. I have a Sulfa (sulfamethazine sodium), tylosin & dox-tylan (it's 20% dox, 20% tylosin). I don't think any of these are the best for the issue, but it's what I have on hand. I also have a couple people antibiotics, but only a couple so not sure if it would help but I can get the names if that's a better option.

Any ideas? @azygous @Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock Anyone?

@azygous I have quite a few amoxicillin-clav 875-125mg. Would that help?

I could order something online, but it won't get here on time. Good to have on hand tho...

Oh, I also have cefdinir 300mg. I think thats for bacterial infections.

Clavamox (amoxy clav) is good to use for reproductive infection. I would probably use 1/4 tablet daily. You could mix the 1/4 tablet in something like cream cheese or egg and give half in the morning and half in the evening for about 10 days, or at least 7.

Another good antibiotic (banned in chickens, but still used by some vets for reproductive infection,) and good for other animals, is Baytril (enrofloxacin.) The 10% liquid can be given orally 0.05 ml per pound for 5 days. That would be 0.25 or 1/4 ml for a 5 pound chicken. A 1 ml needle-less syringe found in most pharmacies for giving baby or animal oral meds are available free. You can order the enro it here:

Awesome, thank you. I have enough of the clavmox for that, I'll go catch her again & crate her. I will order the other to have on hand too.

Appreciate the help. ❤️

Just an update...this hen laid an egg shortly after I started the post (a day or 2), in the run & it was a good egg. She has not laid another since. She is doing well, no lethargy or tail down or anything, she is eating & drinking. I assume she's just taking some time off to heal, which is fine. She is separated out with a buddy so I can get her her meds & track her laying. I'm happy she made it through so far, hopefully she continues to heal.
