Reptipro 5000 Incubator

you do all realize that you can also buy this SAME "heating/Cooling unit as a "Cooler" at Walmart, Target, etc etc...it doesn't have a see through door, but it has the same heating and cooling unit with fan mounted in the side wall. My wife and I have one, and it WILL need a little rewriring to get to work as a bator..but it can be done simply by wiring a PID temp controller into the wiring, which is very easy to do and mounting a probe inside the cooler.

I think we paid $60 for our cooler that heats and cools both...I'll see if I can find a photo of it...it's grey with a white lid.

it would also be SUPER easy to wire in the above cooler to one of those hot water heater thermostats and use it that way, and the heating unit in the cooler would turn on whenever the thermostat called for it.....also, since this IS a cooler, it is very well insulated and I would think would keep temps very very stable.

Thankyou guys for this thread, I've been debating on the ReptiPro for about 6 months now ever since I saw it on eBay. I think I'll be getting one within the next couple of months after hearing your feedback. I would like to get one now but I've talked myself into waiting since we dont' have any more room for chicks until we move in the spring. After looking at ReptiPro's website I'm thinking I should hatch some of those cherry head tortoises instead of chicks though... $250 a pop? I'd be rich

I'd like to add a second shelf which sounds like it should be no problem. For those of you who have done this, what did you make the shelf out of? Seems like it should be a material with holes to allow airflow?

Hey Perolane

Thank you!! You must be excited, day 19! I can't wait to hear how it goes. Have you candled any eggs, do you usually do that?
I like your temp/humidity routine. Seems to work very well, and a very good advise to all us new eggs! I'll try to rotate the eggs from top/down every once in a while. I actually just put in about 10 more eggs after day 5.. I know.. but to my defense, I didn't order them and all of a sudden they were here. But I'll give it a try, and for the last three days of all the other eggs I'll try to keep them by themselves or something. I don't hope the increased humidity will do any harm to them.

Jonny, I usually candle after day 10 & that's about it. That's when I toss non-developers. When this was all new, I candled just about every day!

I would keep those 10 new eggs on the bottom & keep your fingers crossed. If you keep your hatching humidity for the other eggs at no more than 65%, they may be just fine. The thing to be careful with for staggered hatches is when you up the humidity for the first eggs...too much can "drown" the chicks from the last eggs put in when they pip.

I keep the new chicks in rubbermaid totes with heat lamp for 2-3 weeks, then I move them outside to the coop with seperate heated pens. When I eventually introduce them to the "teenager" group @ 4-6 months, normally there's no problems as silkies are pretty easy going.

Great, thank you!! We'll see how the new eggs will do when I increase humidity.

I'm visualizing my future... I'm gonna build a humongous coop with lots of dividers as I probably will get hooked on hatching chickens..! LOL

And about the Reptipro, it seems to be a great unit. The only thing that I don't like about it is the temp difference. If you have a small batch of eggs you'll be fine using just the one shelf.

jettgirl24...wait until Reptipro revises the design for better airflow which will take care of the temp variation top/bottom. They'll also have a second shelf so you won't need to make one!!

Hi,
Another question ... What type of ventilation does the reptipro use? All the threads I've read about home made incubators describe air vents. I'd still like to see some interior pictures of this unit.

Hi,
I believe the Reptipro will accommodate two egg turner shelves ... please correct me if I'm wrong. The issue is the fan and I must say I'm disappointed

Reptipro has not responded to recent comments. A replacement circuit board fix is a quick and cheap fix.

Maybe Al-6517 will chime in here since he built a super incubator and I believe he is working on a hatch-er unit, the reptipro is "SO COMPACT" (a good point)

which means you won't be able to do staggered hatches. So plan on building a hatch-er

One quick point, in Repti pro's possible defense, they may have a licensing agreement to sell in a certain market, and that's what may have prompted the "knock off" comment. Also don't expect a redesign of the product due to some comments here, if you have ever been a part of product design, engineering and manufacture you know these things don't happen overnight or on a whim.

Hi,
We're not talking about redesign on a whim, we're talking about a simple by-pass which allows the fan to stay on all the time time until the unit is turned off.
I'm sure there are plenty of BYC'ers who could do this if they saw a schematic of the circuit board.
Anyone want to post the schematic of the Reptipro 5000 Incubator?
Do we have to go to China to solve this issue?
