Repurposing dog house- chick coop. Any tips?

Thanks!! Like I said, it's crazy how easy it is! So glad I decided to do it myself rather than buy a $400 plain ol' thing from the farm center.

Wow, this is looking great! I've used the picture frame trick for my daughter's built in bed, we wanted an oval window without spending $$$$. Worked beautifully. I love how your picture frame windows look in contrast to the distressed wood...almost like it's wearing jewelry :)

Hi, I am getting a dog house this week. What do I need to do to it to make it safe for chickens? as far as ventilation goes what do I need to do? I live in the Northeast. I am also going to most likely be getting a dog kennel as the enclosure for the coop so the chickens have more room! Thanks in advance for all your help! I did recently purchase Raising Chickens for Dummies as well! haha! I want to be well prepared before getting our chickens.

I've done a few. I don't have to worry about cold, just heat, so I use my dog houses for the layers, and they are in a sheltered open air pen. If you live in a climate like that, I would build the pen strong, and leave a side of the coop without a wall.

Someone mentioned cement. I'm wondering how that affects chickens since all they do is scratch in the dirt all day. They might get depressed if they can't do that.

ok, the lady with the dog house just got back to me! it is 4x4x4! is that big enough for possibly 2 buff brahmas and 1 auracana? and it is not insulated. just worried about the no insulation and if the roost will be good in that height of a coop? thanks all!

I don't know because I live where it's warm. I've seen coops that are like that dog house up on stilts and have a little area wired in so they can go in and out. Then if you close the door at night in the winter, make sure they have some ventilation.

Hopefully some cold weather person can help you.
