rescue dog with ear infections

Thanks for that! I, too, have the same problem with a rescue dog. The ear cleaner I got from the vet - it has drying properties, but I forget the name of it - doesn't seem to be helping. I'll try the vinegar soln. Again, thanks!

Thanks.... that is the recipe I use, I looked on my bottle. I have it in a bottle that have a tip and curls open so its easier to use... I think I will clean him a bit more thoroughly and be more consistent.

I'd get a 2nd opinion about the surgery really, If since he was a rescue you might want to talk to the vets in your area that treat rescue dogs, they might have a better price.

For what you paid for an exam and drops I can get my cats their full annuals with exam and license (well one cat). I have another vet (the exotics vet) that does my doves and rats that would do any dogs for about the same prices...

ACAC often has specials for rescued animals if the animal came through their facility.

We got th price from the vet that deals with this rescue society, he charged more than my regular vet. We also had it checked out with the Atlantic Vet School n PEI.. same deal and no guarantee that it will fix the polups. Canadian pay through the teeth for dental and pet care.

How far are you from Ottawa/Quebec??? I know a basset rescue up there, actually a couple of them, that may have a cheaper vet you can talk to if you are close enough.

If it is yeast, you can use over the counter yeast cream for humans, monistat, etc. I raised shar-pei for years and also did shar-pei rescue, famous for having yeasty ears. We always used this to clear it up. If it is yeast, you should be able to smell it. I would also recommend checking that diet, some dogs can not handle grains, especially wheat, but also soy, corn, and rice can be the culprits. There are many products that are wheat free, maybe start there, see if that helps.

I switched my dog over to Taste of the Wild dog food and it has cut down his ear problems by 95%! I agree diet could be a key factor - buy a no grain dog food, it was well worth the price. Good luck!

The gentian violet treatment works really well to keep the ears in good shape. If you need an antibiotic, those tubes made for treating mastitis in cows work well. You can also get a packet of terramycin powder from the feed store. Put some in the ear every day for at least a month. Ear infections are very prone to return.

In my prior post mentioned his diet, organic grain free.

His ear infection is further down his ear canal so monostat etc would be difficult to apply.. had thought of that though!

Any fungicide will help control yeast. You just have to use it all the time. If his ears are already sore then I would use a vaginal yeast cream like Monostat. To prevent recurrent yeast infections, you can use plain rubbing alcohol daily in the ear.

Yeast is usually a recurrent infection. It almost always comes back in dogs who are prone to the issue. Some people believe it is a food issue. Some people think it is related to the shape of the dog's ear. But either way, all you have to do is prevent a recurrence. If you clean the dog's ears with rubbing alcohol daily, it won't regrow.

Once the dog has scratched and caused an infection, you have to treat that with antibiotics and (sometimes) steroids for pain in addition to the yeast. But once you get it cleared up, just stop the yeast before it grows. It is a simple process.

Some people mix alcohol and vinegar. Some just use vinegar and water. Our vet always suggested rubbing alcohol plain. A few drops in each ear daily will stop the yeast from regrowing.
