rescue dog with ear infections

Another idea you can consider is changing his diet. A diet high in grain will propogate the growth of yeast. I feed raw food to my dogs which I find convenient and simple, however, there are other ways to get the dogs off the grains.

We have used this one before and there is one recipe similar with alcohol as a base. With an inflamed ear the vet said it would be very painful to put the astringents or alcohols in their ears.

I have went through chronic yeast infections in my lab's ears. I thought it was normal until his ear blew way up and we almost had to have surgery.

The cure: get the dog off food that contains grains. It's an allergy.

Get some meds that kills yeast and change the food!

Is this a typo? I understand grains are not a good thing for dogs.

Dogs can digest grains. Cats...not so much.

Marley, our rescue lab, was "vet-checked" by the shelter. Apparently they didn't check good enough because he has yeast in his ears also. I swear he is part bloodhound, but OUR vet swears he's pure. Either way, he's gorgeous.

We've found that constant cleaning helps with Marley. With a shepherd, their ears stand up, so that's a bit odd to hear. Usually it's the flop-eared dogs that have the issues. Anyway, we use alcohol and now we have a new cleaner that was given to us. Marley hates having things dropped in his ears, so we use cotton balls. We soak the cotton balls in the alcohol and "rub" them in his ears. This gets the alcohol all inside and creates friction to get a bit of the gunk out. He LOVES it when we do this and moans. Hilarious.

Hi there

Thanks everyone on your suggestions, we regularly use purple power... ours used hydrogen peroxide and a smaller amount of witch hazal though and yes it sure does stain!

Blues wwonky ear is actualy half gone and the polups fil his ear so this is why we think that he is havings these issues (normally an open ear dog)

As for surgery the vet indicated that it would be in the ball park of 1200. and she figured they would grow back, in such an older dog she thought it would an unreasonable expense..

Dogs are on a feed which is organic and no grains, they originally thought Blue was allergic to grains.

Such a helpful group!

If you are going to use BPT use the REAL recipe, you get better results:

There's a lot more info on that sheet as well on other causes and treatments, etc. And on sensitive ears we use the witchhazel instead of the alcohol.

Don't use if the dog has ulcerated ears, but once you get the ulcers cleared up use this once a week. With 6 basset hounds, 3 of which are prone to ear issues, and all the rescues that come in with major ear problems this has been a lifesaver. Even our vet is impressed with the results and is now recommending it to other clients. As for staining..... doesn't stain fur here but is it stays on any surface for longer than 30 seconds, you have a stain. We use during baths and are rinsing the tub as soon as they shake it out. Other times we treat outside on the porch so our house doesn't have little purple drops everywhere.

I'd get a 2nd opinion about the surgery really, If since he was a rescue you might want to talk to the vets in your area that treat rescue dogs, they might have a better price.

For what you paid for an exam and drops I can get my cats their full annuals with exam and license (well one cat). I have another vet (the exotics vet) that does my doves and rats that would do any dogs for about the same prices...

ACAC often has specials for rescued animals if the animal came through their facility.

You can get antibiotic ear drops without a perscription online at pedmeds or a similar online pharmacy. You save the vet bill and just pay for the med. I do this with our cats reoccuring eye infection. Once you have taken to see a vet and know what it is I see no need to keep paying for a vet visit when you just need the meds for a prolonged time. Good luck!!
