Rescue Roo -- Bumblefoot, Injury, or Something Else? *With Pics*

Oh! I just found some Terramycin (Oxytetracycline HCI) that my dad sent home with me a while back. I've never used it, I guess now will be the time. Now I have to figure out how much to administer . . . it has a list of things it can be used for and the dosages, but nothing that sounds like this, and it's all measured in mg's, and I don't know how I'm going to measure that.

some of the birds in Fair Oaks are beautiful, if it is bumblefoot there would be a circular (ish) scab on the bottom of the foot, if you can find something like that you need to remove the scab, soak in warm epsom salt water and kind of squeeze out the infection (will look a little like puss i think) keep doing it until you have a clean hole in the foot, then pack it with antibiotic cream and wrap with bandages. Repeat while the infection works its way out, can be a week maybe longer.

I assume you are quarantining the bird? I am sure the Fair Oaks birds have very tough immune systems but goodness knows what they carry, people dump unwanted roosters there all the time

Terramycin is 1 teaspoon per gallon of water for prevention(what you are doing). 2 teaspoons for treatment. Just give the mixture as his drinking water.

Thank you SO MUCH, Matt!

I'm going to start treating him today. I guess I'll just use regular salt instead of epsom salts though, because that's all I have.

Yep, that's where I got him, mboreham. And yes, I have him quarantined. He's in my garage . . . I guess he must like it alright because he's commandeered the whole place. He acts like I'm coming into his house uninvited every time I go in there, LOL.

Another thing is make his footing as soft as possible, I've used terry cloth (flece is too slippery). If there are any veterinary herbalists near, call and see if they stock Jing Tang's Golden Yellow- it is wonder stuff, not expensive, apply and jerry rig a bandage ovenight and remove in the morning.

Good luck, I am glad you ate helping him out.
