Rescue - what kind of chicken is it?

You are probably right. I did a wrap on it's leg and foot this morning and found it has tail feathers that were stuck underneath. What kind of chicken I'm not sure. Maybe a mix.
Okay, since it does have tail feathers then it definitely is a chicken.

I am definitely thinking a mix breed. It looks like it might be missing some feathers on it's face near the base of it's beak as well, making it look a little different.

What makes you think male? It doesn't really have anything that looks like a comb. And when being fully feathered, the comb of a cockerel should be prominent.
It's starving, so comb development is likely delayed. It's likely stunted.
I just explained why I believe male. It's based on the Barring.

I don't know much about Cuckoo Marans, so I thought you were saying the double barring to say why you believe it to be a Cuckoo Maran. So can comb development be delayed while feathers are fully developed?

Double barring means it has wide bars, which is a feature males only can have. Wider bars is due having 2 copies of the Barring gene.
