Rescued a Serema....i think? help me out? More pics added, another ?

Congrats to you!!! You are going to just LOVE your tiny hen!

I have a house chicken. She is a Serama, (but I have OEGBs too). I keep her in one of those large parrot cages, with a couple roosts, and a swing. She is happy and healthy, and actually just hatched her first baby by herself! She does however REALLY love her outdoor time. I made a special run just for my babies and banties, so they would be safe from the bigger chickens.

I used PVC to make a 4'w x 8'l x 3'h rectangular frame, then I used the plastic chicken fencing and zip ties to wrap the sides, and I stretched a piece of shadecloth over the top. Its not totally predator proof, but it separates my tiny birds from my large birds, and it keep curious cats away. I use it when I'm home and nearby to keep an eye and ear on the backyard. Its light weight enough to pick up and move, to put over grass, or dirt. It has worked out great! And was fairly cheap, and super easy to assemble. I didn't glue the joints or anything, it can break down and fold up if necessary.

You might be able to find one of those large parrot cages on Craigslist for cheap. They really are perfect. OEGB's like high roosts. Can they live without them? I'm sure they can, but mine like to flutter those wings a lot!

Kudos to your for rescuing the little darling!

OEGB's are absolutely wonderful little birds. Mine LOVE mealworms, strawberries, watermelon, and whole wheat grains. Not so big on sunflower seeds....

lmao Yes he is very hormonal! Im hoping he grows out of it soon! He use to be my little chicken baby. I'd carry him around on his back and he'd fall alseep. now I cant even pet him without him turning all witchy woman (man) on me!!

Thanks so much guys!

she looks JUST like that picture posted of the BB OEGB hen that was posted. The coloring, face, ect....so I am sure that is it!

I will try to get more pictures of her today. if she is nice a calm she might get a bath (she is stinky) and maybe we will let her have some monitored outdoor time. My daughters just love her and she has really taken to my oldest. she also isnt too freaked out by my dog or the cats.

Any suggestions of the best place to get her a chicken diaper? I would love to order one for her so she can have more house free range time.

I think you guys are right with the OEGB...she sure looks a lot like that one pic posted....

She laid an egg for us today, i was suprised at how big it was in comparison to her body size. She has also been allowed to explore a little, and she is BRAVE. No fear. She isnt skittish or timid. She wasnt even scared in her cage when I was vacuuming....instead of being in the back of her cage (what I was expecting) she ran up to the front to see what was going on!!! so shocked!

I have noticed that she seems to have frequent watery poos. Is that concerning???

I keep both Seramas (all have yellow legs) and OEGB's as well as tiny Modern Games. They all live outdoors in a large, mixed breed flock of purebreds including many large standard breeds. They also free range. Just because these birds are small, does not mean they are predator bait. These are some of the wiliest & canniest breeds out there; alert, attentive, and good at hiding when they need to. They are all excellent mothers.

Keeping a bird on its lonesome indoors is not much of a life for a chicken, though I admit it beats being caged up neglected. (I know some people won't agree with this.) Chickens are adapted/accustomed to scratching and exploring and seem to prefer (& I think enjoy) a wide range of stimuli in their environment.

I let most of my birds free range, both LF and bantam. While I do lose some bantams, I lose just as many LF. However, I do keep my 'good' birds (SQ OEGB and SQ Serama) penned up, along with a few other breeds that I'd like to not lose. But they have large 'tractors' that are moved quite often so they have access to greenery and whatever they find.

We plan to give her plenty of outdoor time. But my husband is out of town right now, and we will make her a small tractor or something similar once he gets home. I think we will keep her inside vs. free range outside w/ the big girls b/c we are currently having a HORRIBLE racoon problem. I have lost 4 chickens, and my neighbor has now lost 16. This last attack the racoon was able to pry a board loose from a part of her small coop and killed all the birds. It was horrible. The last attack i had on my chickens, the racoon was able to pry off my sliding coop door...ripped it off the track completely, and pulled a hen out of the coop and injured another hen. I wouldnt even want to consider putting this little thing out there until that is under control. I am already worried sick about my last silkie getting taken.

She has been having a good time today discovering the house. I cant wait to take her outside. She is really enjoying just pine shaving bedding....I dont think she had ever seen it before. Poor girl lived her life on a wire cage.
