Rescued a SICK CHICK... I am such a (stupid!) softie. (PICS added)

Thanks folks... she/he's doing better today. Eating/drinking/pooping normally. Just a little weak still, not terribly energetic, and soooooooo tiny. I am afraid she might be contagious so keeping her in a clear plastic box in the big brooder so she can see the others and not be too lonely. She really wants out, though!

I did the same thing about two weeks ago. But it was two chicks they were getting ready to knock on the head. One died as soon as I got it home and the other had almost all of the skin around i'ts vent and back tummy peel loose with the poo. It was burned from having all that feces packed on it's bumm. But it lived and is FINALLY starting to grow. Good luck!

:fl I'm sending love and care vibes to your little chickie. I hope "he" is a she for you and that she grows to be the prettiest hen in town and lays the biggest eggs ever and nothing but double yolks.

I hope the poor little thing has no worse problems than being the last of the hatch and that all your other babies are fine too. It sounds like a little TLC is already improving things.

* Just thinking that being that small at the age its s'posed to be that it might have that malabsorbtion problem, SC. You could search the posts and get some tips on care-- I've seen a few who have managed to pull them through.

When I bought my 4 barred rocks at the feed store, it was the same thing. The heat lamps were too far away, and they were the smallest in the bin, so I thought they were banties. Half of them had crusty butt which I ended up removing it and the down it was stuck to with nail trimming scissors (really sharp) Man it stunk! One of them limped for a good two weeks, and I kept on making sure it got to the water several times a day. Now they are all doing great! I felt even if they died, at least they'd have a warm, comfortable place for a while, with a little bit of love. I can't blame you one bit! They have actually turned out to be my favorite. They are quiet, gentle, and like to be held. Except the roo in the quartet-- I think he's still mad at me for the whole crusty butt surgery thing. But even he is gentle, just avoids being picked up.
I feel so sorry for all these chicks who don't get bought and who knows what happens to them? I've been avoiding the feed store, since I already have 16 (10 are from the feed store-meaning accidental purchases). Now I know next time I need chicks I can get them from the feed store and not worry about shipping. But that will be a few years at this rate!

Anyway, I hope your little one makes it!

That wasn't stupid, that my friend is called compassion, which is something you have in spades.

I would have, and have, done the same thing. Some make it, and some unfortunately do not. In either event, you will always have the comfort that his or her last few moments, hours, or days, were spent in your loving arms and warm home, rather than freezing cold in a place where they are not wanted. You did the right thing.

Please let us know how your little baby is doing.
