Rescued Duck Eggs .... ETA: Video on 2nd page, normal??

I'm thinking these are dead for sure as, 2 separate eggs, now has 2 air sacs and 1 air sac is much smaller and very jiggly.

ETA: and both smell very normal

I had a couple like that under my duck momma right now. I'm pretty sure they are goners, but I think I left one. Do you see any movement from the duckling inside?

And smell that egg. I expect mine are dead, but I was going to try to check again this evening when its darker outside. I couldn't get a real good look the other day.

ok well, after responding again, and seeing how that one was more jiggly, I took it out around 1pm and laid it on the table to take outside and open. I had forgotten about it and about 20 min ago, my son said it was cracked. It was demolished looking, as tho someone hit it and shattered a small circle into it and there was a crack completely around it and pieces of the shell was falling off. so I took the shell off and the membrane was still completely. so it wasn't done internally. when i opened it up, it had it's beak tucked and was obviously dead. :( So now i really worry about the rest of them. i took a pic in case you wanted to see and could tell me if it is something we did or was just gonna die anyway, which i dont think was the case.

After having all of them develop a 2nd, or even 3rd, air sac along the sides, i decided to crack them all open today. every one was dead and none had an absorbed yolk. the membrane was completely in tack and the shell just broke apart. And none smelled. so it has to be something I did or didn't do. :(

Honestly, the only eggs besides ones shipped through the mail that I've seen loose and sloshy, were ones under hens that just rolled the crap out of them. Since yours were out in a field, do you know if she was in the same spot the whole time, or could they have started developing and she had to move them?

Or...how long did they sit in the open while your husband was mowing? Were they in direct sunlight and very warm? Did he carry them carefully when he brought them inside?

I don't know, just trying to throw out questions to narrow down possibilities.

I'm very sorry that none made it. :hugs

Thanks, they were in direct sun, but he left them til 10 that night so would have cooled significantly. As for his carry, he put them in his ballcap, so didn't just me too much but could have been. As for her moving them, no clue. Didnt see it til he hayed.

Thanks. I'm hoping they just got cold. Next time I'll tell him to just bring them in if she does the same with not being able to find them.

Yea its so hard to guess what may have gone wrong, so i suppose we just have to chalk it up to experience.
And by the way, getting cold would have been much less harmful than getting too hot. Cooling is a normal process as they get off the eggs daily, but too much heat can easily kill an embryo.

I think you should collect some more and try again. :)

still waiting for my duck momma to show me some ducklings. Today is day 28 for the initial eggs that i gave her. :fl

Sorry they didn't make it. I still admire you very much for trying. :hugs
