I took home this injured pigeon almost 8hrs ago. I thought it only had a broken leg but unfortunately, it has a huge open wound under its wings. I don’t have any idea what could have cause the injury tho (i’ll attach a photo below). I don’t think I could take it to the vet since i already ask the ones nearby and sadly they only caters cats and dogs.

I tried to feed him an electrolyte solution (water with a pinch of sugar and salt) but he doesn’t want to even if i put his beak on the solution. I also tried to clean his wound with a mixture of warm water, salt, and betadine.

I wanted to ask what more could I do to help this poor fella. It was actually my first time encountering this situation so I really don’t have any idea. All I did so far was just from what I’ve searched on the internet. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Attached below is the photo of its wound (warning: graphic content)

Welcome to the site! Sorry it’s under these circumstances.

I don’t think your picture attached. But try dripping the sugar water solution onto the beak a few drops at a time. Keep him somewhere warm, dark and quiet if he becomes too overwhelmed. At some point, if he lets you without becoming too overwhelmed, pack the wound with a triple antibiotic ointment like neosporin (w/o pain reliever in it) twice a day after rinsing with something such as Vetericyn. Try to keep the wound covered in ointment at all times so it doesn’t dry out.

@CCsGarden may be able to help you further, she has helped saved a few wild birds before. I am not sure about pigeons, though.

Pictures please?
The wound sounds pretty big. The way it's acting, it might not make it.
Once I see it, I might be able to help you:hugs

Sorry for the late response, I thought i’d be better to let it rest last night to not stress it too much.

Okay, so that's not too bad.
Looks like it got in a fight. I would clean the wound as @alinas2010 said,

Keep her in a dark place inside.

Try too give her some sugar water or cooked oats too help give her a boost.

Is there any alternatives for the vetericyn? I don’t think I can afford it at the moment (its quite pricey here where i live).

Also, should I force it to drink or eat? It wasn’t interested on anything since i took it home. I’m also concern if I’m causing it too much stress or its still in shock state.

Sorry, absolutely. Does not have to be Vetericyn, just the first thing that comes to my mind! You can use basically any mild wound spray as long as it doesn’t have pain relief in it. Some people use chlorahexadine diluted, hibiclense, even saline. A homemade saline solution is easy to make if you’re in a pinch.

CC will have better advice on feeding than I could ever give. I know in poultry it’s not abnormal for them to not want to eat for a few days after they are injured - they’re in a pain, possibly recovering from or still in shock, scared, and have been taken to a strange new place. We probably wouldn’t want to eat much in that situation either.

I would gently open the beak and syringe some warm sugar water directly inside, then lift her head back just a little so she swallows it. Do the same if you give her some cooked oats or mashed wet chicken feed.
Remember, do this very slow and calm.

Antibiotic ointment and Bag Balm will work great, you can find both at Walmart.
Not sure if you are able to get any of those.
