Rescued some Leghorns last night (graphic pic)

could you do an epsom salt sitz bath? poor girl needs a good soaking. i would treat her for parasites also. Once you get her vent under control perhaps you should worm her. vitamin water is a must. bless your heart.

I checked them for lice and mites as soon as I got them, surprisingly, none of them had any. I have epsom salts so I will do a bath this afternoon, its such a nice day outside.

KEEP THEM SEPERATE FOR AT LEAST 30 DAYS!!

I kept them seperate for 1 week to observe them, they appeared perfectly healthy. No lice, mites, open wounds... just a few missing feathers. I moved them into the main coop after a week and I've had no touble. Everyone always says to seperate for at least a month but I never have, and so far I've had no problems.

I believe it's recommended to keep them separate for a month because some illnesses don't show up right away - but only after the bird is under stress - such as being in a new environment (home). On the other hand, if they are carriers of something, and not especially stressed or otherwise having an outbreak - they could still infect the rest of the flock no matter how long they are kept separate. You never know when you bring in new birds - unfortunately.

I bought some birds from a breeder - that I picked up and saw her flocks and the conditions they were kept under - and felt confident in putting them in with the rest of my birds fairly quickly. But just because they conditions were good, doesn't mean they weren't carriers of something - it's a risk I knowingly took because I don't have room to keep birds isolated for more than a short time.

Hopefully your birds will do just fine. I'm sure they certainly are enjoying their improved living conditions

Ugh yeah I dont like that when they keep them in small cages. I buy only Free Range eggs and preferably organic. Have a couple more months before my new girls start laying. My only other hen is around 3 years and I think she stopped laying (unless shes hiding them in the vacant neighbors yard LOL... now she just plays top dog with all my other poultry XD

I agree with the other poster on it looking like vent gleet. Hope the girls heal up for you as it sounds like they are getting good care in your hands.
