Rescuing goose from park. I would love some advice!

Oh yeah. I'm telling you try a mirror. Bring one with you when you go sit with it make sure it sees the mirror it will eventually come to you. I'm telling you a mirror will get its attention.

Birds can be vent sexed at a lab however I was trying to save her some money. I vent sex my birds when they are babies- I was referring to that. I can easily tell by voice when they are older. To me, they have always sounded different and I have been doing this for years. I suppose I might run into a bird someday that will be difficult to tell, but it hasn't happened yet. My guess is that I could tell her the sex by watching a video. The chances are pretty good.
labs do gender from DNA from feathers or blood. A person who knows how to vent sex can vent them as goslings, juveniles or adults. Our Sebastopol white flock all sound identical when they come out of the stall in the mornings. African and Chinese of course are different and can be visually told apart just from size alone.

gender doesnt matter though when it comes to rescuing a single bird from a park

We haven't tried in a while. It feels impossible to do it with two young kiddos and the goose has already figured out that I'm trying to catch it. Then there are is always someone someone at the park I have to explain the story to as to why I am doing such things to the goose. I'm not giving up; just giving it sometime. I'll figure something out.

Honey, I wish I was closer I would come help you catch that goose. Go to the 'Texas' thread here on BYC and see if you can find a BYC'er that is close enough to you to help w/ the rescue.

I'm assuming that she does not know how to vent sex them since it sounds like she is new to geese in general.?? The point is that it would cost her to have it done in a lab, paying a person to vent sex them, do "lab work"' whatever. Also, didn't she ask us to help her determine the sex as she might want a mate for the bird? Maybe I read the post wrong. I felt that if we could see a video we could listen and watch, let's say, and have a good chance of figuring it out for her. Just trying to help her, but clearly you have all of the answers so I guess my help is not necessary. Good luck Steff-if you want help, inbox me. I have friends in Texas also as I lived there for 8 years.

Are domestic geese different to vent check than wild? My FIL work Wildlife fishery service and vent checked the adult Canadian we rescued. It does not seem that difficult. Gross but not hard, LOL :p

Hi. I dont know what part of Texas you're in but if you can't get him/her soon, I might drive down and help you. The biggest problem is that people have been mean to him/her, so s/he is leery of humans. The best case scenario would be if you could take your kids to the park everyday at the same time and feed it and prayfully no one will interfer and you can gain his/her trust enough to effect a rescue. I'll be praying for both of you.
