Resiratory Illness, We are running out of things to try - long history

Thanks, got you on the 'food grade' cinnamon

Thyme, totally understand about the toxicity. I must be careful using the EO as well.

Thank you for answering about the cranberries.

I received a PM from another poster explaining to me about the importance of using Oxine to disinfect.

We will get that and do as instructed.

Thanks for you help, again.

If you are not dealing with CRD (chronic respiratory diesease) caused by MG then you should be looking at the virus and bacterial causes.

Remember that antibiotics will not help you with a virus, only help with a secondary infection.

dlh unicorn is very good at disease of poultry.

Those of us who suffer problems with their flocks sometimes walk away from the experience with no real pinpointed cuase of what happened.

The real key to all of this is biosecurity. If you are going to increase your flock numbers, buy only day old chiks from kwown hatcheries.

Raise them until they can be introduced to your flock and cross your fingers they do well.

One sick adult bird from outside your biosecurtiy can cuase havock or even the death of your entire flock.

culling will slow the process, but once introduced, the flock is at risk.

Isolating, even for weeks or months, may not be enough as some birds become carriers.

Auctions are the WORST place you can buy a bird.

There are some poultry dieseases that will leave a horrid memory.

No one like to cull thier brds

Keljonma, they are ever so slightly improved. I made up the EO substitute for the VetRx and we administered it to 8 of the girls along with the Ivermectin paste yesterday. Just checking with you about number of EO drops into the water. How many drops of each of the EO would you put into 2 oz of distilled water?

Also giving them a wet mash of ground up carrot, starter/grower feed, yogurt and water first thing in the morning. They enjoy it. Free choice s/g feed all day long and they are outside pecking throughout the day too. We have noticed more improvement since we started to let them outside in the sunshine, fresh air, and to do what chickens do - peck at the ground. I just think they are happier and more amused being able to get outside.

We received the final report from the diagnostic lab on Saturday. The only thing different to report is that both pullets were emaciated, one severely. That is the one with the tumor growth, not cancerous, and they also found E coli in her too. The Australorp, so weird, they could find absolutely nothing wrong just slightly emaciated.

To Rimshoes: Love the pix of the Vulturine, just beautiful. Is it one of yours? I have 6, five week old guineas too but mine are the common slate pearls. They are adorable.

We thought we were purchasing from a reputable seller who does purchase from a good hatchery. He has been good to us but we wouldn't do this again. Next time - we buy straight from the hatchery and raise them ourselves. And we don't plan to do swaps, etc. we understand that the risk is too great.

Thanks to all

Posey, sorry it has taken so long to get back to byc.... For 2 oz at a time. I use equal amounts of the EOs - 15 drops. Shake well before using.

Well, a week ago we finished a 2 week round of LS-50 giving 2 tsp per half gallon of water. They seemed to be getting better. I still have eight of the original 12 chicks. They are now 10+ weeks old and all have gained weight and grown. Some more than others but that's normal because some were sicker than others. They are at the age where they have just about lost all of the chick color and are starting to grow the beginnings of their waddles. Some have the facial blush happening and combs growing and turning the pink or red color. They are growing up!

It's been a week without an antibiotic and I have been giving them probiotics in a morning mash of feed, ground carrot and cranberries, water, and yogurt + beta carotene. They all gobble it up but I can see that some of them are beginning to slip back. The symptoms are returning.

Last evening I talked with Peter Brown of First State Vet Supply. He believes I have bee dealing with coryza. The girls don't have a foul smell at all but he told me that chickens can have coryza and not have the smell. He is sending me stronger antibiotics which I should get in the next couple of days. He is very optimistic about their total recovery because they have responded well to previous antibiotics, which were just not strong enough.

So I'm praying that the two sickest girls can just hang on. I think they can because they are still eating and drinking and moving around.

This has been a long long haul but we have learned so much through it all. Here's hoping that we are near the end of the tunnel, I can see the light. :)

I wanted to check in and see how this is all working out for you. How is it going? What was your treatment since the last update?

Hi All, I've been thinking that I needed to do an update. Thank you ChooksChick for the reminder.

The girls were placed on gallimycin and a stronger oxytetracyclin than I could get locally both administered in their water. I also did daily nasal flushing with tylan 50 and then my essential oil version of VetRx. We also dropped tylan 50 in the eyes of those with severe conjunctia showing. I made them a daily AM wet mash of ground up carrot, chick crumbles, probiotic capsule, beta carotene capsual, termeric and water. We did this for 21 days.
All symptoms cleared up. For the first time in months my girls had normal looking eyes, no nasal drainage, etc.

After a week of no antibiotics a few of the girls started to show symptoms, nasal gunk, slight puffiness to the eyes but I just kept giving them the mash and watched them. They seemed to be able to fight the symptoms themselves this time. We are hoping that they have built an immunity to this now. We have the vaccine on hand now if we get new chicks or a few girls don't seem to be able to fight it on their own. It's been 3 weeks with no antibiotic and we are doing good.

Here is one of the original girls, Fiona, feeling great. She has just a bit of conjunctiva showing on this eye only, that will probably always be there. We have others with the same thing but not all of them.
