Rest in Peace Nugget

BYCers are the best and so giving. You just gotta love this place. My heart is always warmed by the acts of kindness I see hear. Congrats and I hope your classroom loves their new project and the incubator!

I'm somewhat new to the forum, missed all the famous Nugget stories, but I cry everytime I read one the the posts. Can't wait to start buying the Nugget books.
I'll make sure my grandsons get copies, too. Nugget will live on in everyone's memories.

Thank you all. We didn't bury Nugget until today, we took him out and laid him on the ground while we dug his grave and every chicken and duck on the place came by to pay their respects. No one pecked at him or stepped on him or did anything rude at all. I have always felt that the feelings and emotions of animals are highly underrated, and today, watching the hens and then the roos say goodbye, it was so touching. Every one of the ducks walked up to him too, and Babette Duck sat right next to him for most of the time he was there. As much as I wanted to I just couldn't take a picture of him lying there. I wanted to record the other birds saying goodbye but it just seemed very disrespectful taking a picture of him in death. I have the images in my mind, and that will have to be enough for me.

That is so interesting. We did that with our first head hen, a RIR named Ruby. We laid her out so the others could see. Strangely enough, the one who came to pay respects was Violet, who, as you know, we lost this year. She took over as head hen awhile after Ruby passed on. Now, with Violet gone, I'm not sure who is emerging as the leader.

That is what I'm wondering, even though Nugget wasn't the head roo, Blue is, Nugget took care of the majority of the ladies. He didn't mate with them, but he made sure they were safe, got their treats, their food, he fluffed their nests,,, at least the ones he could get into, he fluffed! He took care of the babies, watched over the juvies, patrolled,, and just did so much. I don't think I have a roo capable of filling his spurs!

Writer.. that was very touching to hear about how the other animals paid their respects to nugget today. sigh...

I am glad to hear that you have a new incubator for the classroom though! Thanks Ellie!

I also am
waiting to own the Nugget story books! I am on the library staff in town, and my manager buys chicken books
with me in mind. I would definitely see to it that we had any Nugget books that you write! I hope it becomes a reality!
He has had many adventures, many that have brought smiles to my face and my families!

Still thinking of you and still in shock about this.

Thank you Fishermom, I'll remember you when I have a ton of books I can't sell lol!!!!! It's actually coming along, I'm working on his stories rather than my homework!
