I just read through all 23 pages of this and I'm crying like a baby.
Rest in peace, Sir Nugget.
I've somehow missed the Nugget stories. I don't get to be on here much. But you can bet I'll be looking for them now. You are such a GREAT writer of words, Writer of Words. You just HAVE to put his stories in book form. Let us know. We'll ALL want a copy.
I could easily see how Nugget had touched the lives of sooooooo many. He was obviously such a special, special rooster. I've had one like that. I can feel the pain of your loss. It's amazing how they worm their way into our lives and hearts.
I appreciated the way you let the other birds pay their respects to him. We always carry a lost one past all the cages and pens. The birds ALWAYS stop what they are doing and stand at attention. I pretend to be a trumpet and play "Taps". It is a serious moment here and our birds sincerely take it seriously.... the same way the dogs and cats do when we lay to rest a dog or a cat. I think animals understand a whole lot more than we humans give them credit for.
So, in this moment of remembering and honoring Sir Nugget, I think we are also remembering all the ones we've loved and had to say a temporary good-bye to. There is NO DOUBT whatsoever in my mind that we WILL see them again. They are just over the horizon, waiting for us to join them. Love is eternal. It NEVER FAILS.
So..... rest in peace, Gentle Nugget........ and then get up and have a BLAST with all those GIANT HENS!!!!
to you, Kate and Steven
