My mother was TOLD to smoke during pregnancy because it meant that her babies would be smaller and easier to deliver! Not lying here. Mom was up to four packs a day by the time my brother was born and he was indeed just a six pounder. Too bad she started smoking so late with me because I came two weeks late and weighed in at almost nine pounds. Poor Mom.

The problem with the "it's my body, I can do what I want" mentality is that the baby is never taken into consideration.

To do so would change the whole debate of whether or not the fetus is a baby or just a clump of cells that has no rights until it's actually born. And that will never change because to give that child rights in utero would up end Roe V Wade.

Until our society values life - all life - then women will be able to hide behind the "my body, my right" mantra and get away with it.

It is my firm belief that once you allow yourself to become pregnant, it is no longer about YOU. It's about the baby and what is best for the baby. Drug, alcohol, smoking - those things are not what's best for anyone ESPECIALLY a growing baby.

It's not a surprise that in a society where we allow children to be aborted that people are up in arms that a private business refused to serve alcohol to a pregnant woman.

Good for the restaurant and good for the waitress.

True it's her body, but when you're pregnant there's another person and their body involved who has no say so in what they're subjected to.

Sorry, the other "person" doesn't get a vote. I'm sure if they did they'd be pretty upset at some of the diets these pregnant women are on or the other activities they're involved in but this is getting too close to another topic that will get this thread shut down so I'll back off and take care of my own FAS kids for now.

That other person's vote should count above all the rest. I don't understand anyone who wouldn't put their unborn child's health above anything they might want to do.

So then women who are anti-depressants which are showing some birth defects now probably shouldn't conceive. And those overweight women who can't control their addiction to food should NEVER have children at all. Smokers, asthmatics, women who dye their hair, women who work under flourecent lights, And of course those darn diabetics should get themselves fixed. And what about women who have genes that cause them to have babies with birth defects? I think we should all be cleared before we get pregnant and then live in a sterile environment with three well balanced, organic meals a day....of course we'll need to find three doctors who can agree on what kind of meal denotes balanced so that theory is going out the window now.

I've known women who were not pregnant but looked as if they might be. And I've even known pregnant women who never showed at all. Most women who are recently post partum still look pregnant ( just not overdue

So how is the restaurant/bar/server supposed to KNOW that a woman is actually pregnant?

Let's say that someone simply has a lot of belly fat--or even a tumor in their abdomen (my aunt had a non-cancerous stomach tumor the size of a small basketball, although she was much too old to be pregnant)--being denied service due to speculation on what is likely a very sensitive topic is likely to result in at least lost business, and might well result in litigation.

In Arizona it is the law to conspicuously post a warning sign anywhere liquor is sold that states: "Warning Drinking alcoholic beverages, including distilled spirits, beer, coolers and wine, during pregnancy can cause birth defects."

That removes the liability from the bar and places responsibility squarely on the individual who chooses to drink alcohol.

scbatz33 be careful you're heading for a very slippery slope. Let's not get on that tack.

Honestly, ONE GLASS of wine with dinner occasionally during pregnancy won't hurt anything...even DOCTORS will tell you that. I wouldn't personally condone drinking while pregnant, but I'm sure there have been plenty of children born to mothers--who didn't know they were pregnant and went out drinking weekly--who were fine.

But any business has the right to refuse service to anyone.

I don't either Katy. I couldn't so much as take a cold tablet when I was pregnant. Wouldn't take tylenol let alone anything stronger when I got a migraine and some of these women .....just look at my beautiful baby in my avatar! She will never live a "normal" life because of the things her birth mother did. Who could do that? But it's her right to do so and I'm going to defend that right because to let her lose the right to her own body starts us going places that make eugenics look fun.

All the other stuff being thrown into this discussion is not relevant to the OPs original post and will get this thread closed quickly. Everyone has their opinions and pointing fingers and such will not change anything, all it will do is escalated into an all out war.....so please stop while the thread is still open!
