Restless Leg Syndrome?

I've had some success with muscle relaxants. I use one called Restavit

(Doxylamine succinate) It is an over-the-counter drug sold for insomnia and there is nothing on the pack about it being a muscle relaxant yet it is often included in other drugs, like Mersyndol

which is part Paracetemol and part Doxylamine succinate on which it is described as a muscle relaxant??
It may be sold under a different trade name where you are.

Restless Leg has cost me a lot in worn out sheets. I hate it, but not as much as I hate hearing people say it is a made-up condition. Why is it when medical science finally researches and names a condition that has existed for ages undiagnosed the public respond with scorn? Chronic Fatigue sufferers were dismissed as lazy. How inconsiderate our fellow man can be.

Good luck, I feel for you.

Highlander,

You hit the nail on the head with the heebie jeebie creepy crawlie description. that is how i have described it in the past to my husband. It is a heebie feeling. ErinM

Do you believe it is hereditary? Both my parents had it and my sister and I both get it too. We also got it before there was a name for it, we used to call it "funny legs". Ha flipping ha, eh?

The fact that all 4 of us had it seems to give more credence to the dietary theory as we were obviously eating the same things, or not as the case may be. Unless of course the nerve thing is a hereditary issue too?

I still can't imagine taking a hot bath though, heat always seems to make mine worse. I usually have to throw my legs out of the duvet at night.

I do think it is hereditary - absolutely I do. I'm the only one who has it out of us 3 kids - but I'm also the only kid who has alot of autoimmune things and conditions - and my mom has some issues as well

Go here: its where my neurologist directed me - and I've found some helpful info from there as well. It's the National Inst. for Neurological Diseases at NIH

NOTE: Neurologists do believe it is hereditary btw...if there is a familial element already involved

for a while i thought this RLS talk was a bunch of non sense. until i had it for a few weeks and then off and on there after. i always had the urge to kick or move my legs and try and clinch my toes as if they were fist.especially at night brfore bed time. i think the drugs i was on at the time had a lot to do with it though. i have not really had any problems as of late but after reading some of this thread i realized i also gave up red meat and that could also be a factor in my relief.

I'll have to go back and read all the comments to see if someone posted a good cure all.. as I don't like to take meds.

Mine started a few years ago and would come and go. I found elevating my legs would help. Then it started up the back of my thigh toward my phsiatic (not how you spell it!!) nerve and I don't know if that started kickin too but it was awful!!! Then, I switched from cheap sandals to a good sneaker ...and a good sandal. That helped tremendously!!!

Now that I am 8 months pregnant, it's back with a fury. I guess I need to kick off the tevas and grab the nikes

I'll post again in a couple days and let you know if that helps.

Last night was the worst in a long time. I kept wanting to stretch.. then that gives me charlie horses (cramps) and that's a whole lot worse. I do know the cure for muscle cramps like that... bananas!! My doc told me about it and it's true. The potassium in bananas will help prevent muscle spasms... so Im back on bananas too!!

Im thinking all the canning I've been doing is adding to the problem.

- it was quite embarrassing trying to explain to my family dr. 10 years ago what I was going through... maddening as all hell to be honest. He'd look at me like I had 3 heads! But then again... back then they didnt believe in fibromyalgia either....
roll.png
and I have that too... or chronic fatigue syndrome... Matter of fact my family dr. didnt believe in fibro until HE came down with it.... Well La-te-dah doc...took you getting it to believe in it eh? Hmmm... strange how life works

ahhh..thank god doctors and the medical community finally smartened up, listened and learned from their patients huh?

Ok here's a fix that was given to my husband (who has it in the worst way) by our family practioner and for my husband, this works like a charm!!!

When you feel it coming on, get up and take one (1) Benedryl tablet. If you don't have Benedryl, take a Dimetapp. In about 15 minutes, the RLS will be gone.

Or, as in my case, you'll be sound asleep! The Benadryl worked for me.
