Retired in Alabama

Thank you everybody for the warm welcome. This has to be the most congenial site on the internet, but then aren't all chicken people.

I have plenty of questions but am still exploring the site so I don't post inappropriately. I would like to post a few pics of my chicken pens and garden for the curious.

Chicken population is 10 to 12 breeding/laying hens and 2 to 3 rosters at any one time in two flocks and 15 to 30 progeny for meat or future breeding replacements.

Garden size is 2500 sq ft on a 5 acre homestead. With some nut and fruit trees in early stages, cold Hardy citrus and short season bananas and other berries and edibles.

They are Delawares from Stromberg's and have been laying about a month. I've maintained a line of Barred Rocks for 8 years now and have just hatched my first Delaware chicks from these birds.

The Delawares have proven to be excellent foragers and smart, friendly, inquisitive birds. Good layers too.
Mine better get to work No rent for a couple months and now only 1 egg every day or every other day.:he In there defense, I only had about 20 or so adult hens who all went into a molt when I changed their feed on September 5th. The pullets are now singing the egg song but not yet laying and with shorter days, the girls aren't really up to the full normal day to day activity.

BTW, you have great looking birds.
