Rhode Island Red? Gender?

Pullet

Why are so many people saying Roo on this small combed guy.. I mean gal (lol)??

I think part of the problem here is that people are judging this bird as though it was a RIR. It's not a pure blood RIR as it lacks the deep body and uniform dark mahogany color of a true RIR (its feathers even appear to have some off color red lacing in them). As I stated in my earlier post (and some others have stated since), this bird is a Production Red.

I purchased this chick at a feed store as a RIR but I figured from reading many other posts that it is most likely not a RIR. It being a Production Red rather than a RIR changes whether it looks like a roo or a pullet though? I have no idea, I really don't have any experience with roosters other than my barred rock starting to crow a few days ago.

Considering this chick has a very small comb and waddles that are still pink and it hasn't showed me any signs of it being a roo such a chest bumping with my barred rock and it definitely hasn't crowed then I am going to keep assuming as I had that it is a pullet. The person I know being very adament that it was a rooster was making me doubt what I thought.

Thanks for all the opinions and I will keep you posted as to whether I get an egg or it crows but I am assuming I will get an egg from it.

The problem with it being a Production Red is that there is no way to know for sure what breeds are in it. Obviously they are predominantly red gene breeds, but the off red lacing that it appears to have makes me think that there is something else in it as well (which is often the case with Production Reds). Depending on what other breed(s) are in its history, it's comb and wattles could be small compared to those of a Rhode Island Red. Hopefully it will turn out to be a pullet.

Arrrghh! Yet another mystery never reaching a satisfying conclusion! Was it a boy? Was it a gir?! Have mercy people!
I can guarantee you the outcome was that she was a pullet. :) I am not sure why there was even controversy. It had not outward signs of being a cockerel. By 13 weeks a cockerel would look incredibly different, especially for a relatively quick to mature breed!
