Need some help. I added a few more to my flock. One of them being a RIR. I purchased them sexed for a feed store. My RIR and silver laced are about 10 weeks old. My concern is my RIR's cone is so much more dominate I am worried I have myself a rooster. Can anyone look at the photo and confirm my suspicions or was I indeed sold a hen.

Good afternoon to you all. My wife and I just brought home our first six RIR hen chicks. Approx. 2 weeks old. Any advice for a pair of beginners would be appreciated.
Have a great day!!!

I've been trying to find out if RIR are supposed to have 4 toes. Can't seem to locate the information easily but since all 6 of them have 4, I'm assuming this is correct. And also what age do they have to be to determine rooster? I can't have roosters so hoping most of them are hens.

You could post pictures of them and we can give it a try.

I found out. 3 toes on most but some have that 4th little one on the back. Depends on breed. I won't worry about it. The chickies look healthy and are in ugly duckling stage right now anyway. I also read that wattle/comb color can be a high indicator of gender since roosters redden up before 8 weeks normally when hens do not. We'll see! I'm gonna watch for that and make a note of those that do and see if it's right.

All non 5 toed breeds should have 4 toes. 3 front and 1 back.
