Today I noticed one of my Rhode Island Red chickens limping and trying to not put weight on her left leg. We finally were able to catch her when she was taking a break roosting in the coop run (they free range during the day, have a fenced in run for days we aren't around/at night). We took a look at her toe and it discolored (darker) and has almost like a ring around it. Nothing is in the wound that we can see cutting off circulation. It looks like she broke the toe and its splitting off at that point?
Her weight looks fine, she was moving around fine long enough we didn't notice she was limping around. The toe looks swollen above that point.
So far we just caught her, isolated her, and have her in the cage in the house for now with just some water. We don't know what we should really do about the toe. Toe injuries from what I read can be splinted but with the way this one is discolored and has a ring makes we think that isn't the answer? Will it just fall off on its own if it gets to a certain point?
We would like to treat at home. This is one of the first real injuries we have had with out chickens and ducks in since we have had them for 2 years. Thank you in advance.
