Rhode Island Red?

Not with all that black. He is a crossbred.
If you believe he's a cross breed, any guesses on that? I'm genuinely interested and curious. So far some of his kids have been sporting some deep reds (leakage) and looking beautiful overall.

Hard to say for sure. Where did you get him?

Just a local who had one too many roos. She mentioned him being hatch project of sorts (I think for a class). So not sure on his background other than that?

The exact mix will be impossible to determine. He is a heavy breed mix. Such as Australorp, Jersey Giant, RIR, Production Red, Black Sexlink, etc could be in his background.

I like this idea. He's actually pretty decently heavy and tall. Very tall, actually... All the more reasons to cherish him! I also just raised out a few RIR from cackle hatchery, and they just looked different. More red/brown... Still shiny, but not nearly as much green(or black?) (Keep in mind the black in the pictures is very iridescent green)

Shouldn't be any black in a pure RIR.

In the Roos hackles, they had some green in there (not a whole lot, they really were mostly red)

I ment in the chest. RIR should have black in the main tail and edge of the primary wing feathers but that's all. Body, saddle, and hackles should be red.
