How old do my Rhode Island Reds have to be to lay eggs?

Any where from 18 weeks and up. By the time they are 30 weeks old, they should be laying on a regular basis and producing consistant size eggs.

I have 5 RIR's 24 weeks old and not see the first egg yet.

My "complete encyclopedia of CHICKENS" says between 4 and 5 months. They lay on average 220 eggs per year.
