I used to raise chickens, about 7 years ago....... I raised all rhode island reds and used a 6 foot fence.. Would a 4 foot with no net on top keep them in? Thanks in advamce.

I have some chicken that have no desire to leap the fence and other that LOVE to leap over it. And I have a 6 foot fence. I think they could easily clear a 4 footer

It depends on a few factors:

1- If the run is big enough, they won't bother jumping out.
2- The actual bird(s) and their specific flightiness.
3- The sturdiness of the wire. If it is easily bent down to a foot or so they will go over it without a second thought.
4- What is outside the run? If it's delicious then they'll want to get out more.

That being said, if this is their actual run (I assume it is) and not just another enclosure for free-range type expeditions, I STRONGLY recommend a top for the run, for predator reasons.

i have RIR's currently, i am looking at them outside right now! Clip their wings, my picket fence around their run is 42 inches high, they used to roost on top of the 6 pt perimeter fence. Once clipped they will quit trying to fly. Just stretch out one wing, clip the 10 or so flight feathers. there are a bunch of videos on youtube. thats how i learned.
