I was told that the Rhode Island Reds are wonderful layers and a great starting bird for new chicken raisers. Anyone have an opinion before I purchase 6 chicks on Wednesday?

We have two, very easy and lay well for us

I have one on the point-of-lay and she's very friendly. I bought her when she was 15 weeks and I didn't think she'd be real friendly. I assumed she was raised in a production-type environment with minimal human contact, so I knew I'd get a good layer, but I didn't know what a great pet I'd get!

i like rirs they are a duel purpose bird good for laying and good for eating
but i dont eat any of my birds
great for beginner or pro

I have both Ameraucana and Rhode Island Reds, both breeds are so friendly that my 3 year old catches then and carries them all over the yard without much protest. My Reds lay more regularly and are better free rangers but I have heard that the roosters are sometimes agressive, I only have hens.

I started out with rir's and they are great layers, and they do better than most breeds in extreme temps.
