Rhode Island White Thread

Hi there I am new to world of raising chickens and would like some help if anyone can. I have what are supposed to be Rhode Island White chickens with one being a White Rock thrown in as bonus with blue legs. After reading all the posts I am confused as to what the RIW's really should look like and how to tell difference between sexes. Mine are about 7 weeks old they look to have blue/green eyes and pale combs so far. Will try and post pics after I figure out how to get them out of my phone and onto here. Thanks so much. Scratch that skin is reddish and feet orange/yellow and combs orange/pink

Here are some of my Rose Comb Rhode Island Whites. I do raise them for showing. Their eyes may be the bluish when they are young but should change to more of a brownish color as they get older. I never heard of a White Rock laying blue eggs. The only blue/blue-green egg layers I know of are Easter Eggers, Ameraucanas and Araucanas. Rhode Island White should look much the same as a Rose Comb Rhode Island Red, long, deep, wide cinder block of a body. Single Comb Rhode Island Whites are not a real breed, just something created by the hatcheries. cmom's RIW's look pretty good there.

I would imagine the "White Rock" that was thrown in with blue legs is actually a White Jersey Giant, as Rocks have yellow legs, but the giants have blue/slate legs.

Thanks for the pictures mine look just like that, a few have large combs that are turning a pinkish color at base now. As for the blue legged one who was blue but I believe to be Bluebell now the person said it was a show white rock and the legs would turn yellowish with smoky stripe down side, we'll see huh? I will know for sure soon if I need to find homes for some if they are roosters. I want to keep one rooster but my chickens include RIW's, lavender orpingtons, lemon cuckoo orpingtons, blue laced red wyandotes and lavender blue salmon favorelles and I don't know which rooster to keep, any suggestions??? Anyway I love my RIW's they are pretty funny they all come running over and like to listen to me when I talk to them and one I named Mabel flies up to top of pen and walks over to me and just stares at me while turning her head at different angles and watches the babies in next pen. One day she was in with babies sleeping with them, pretty cute, she'll make a good Momma some day.

Look in that big grey book in your avitar & you'll find White Giants have willow legs :-]

here are some pictures I think two are roosters (to be) 3 hens and one I am not sure. They wouldn't hold still cuz they love fresh bedding and I just added it so they were "foraging" silly birds. The close up is Mabel she loves to come up by me and is the one who was with babies. I will see if someone can help me get better pics later. Now I know one of the pictures is a lavender blue salmon favorelle but thought I would post and see if anyone can tell if she is a he or what I can't tell at all she is about 2 1/2-3 weeks old here.

Rhode Island Whites have yellow legs, rose combs (most hatcheries send you single combs from what I have seen.), and a brick like body.

Here are some pictures of one a pullets ... The male has a lot to grow yet.




Pictures above I think show fairly good confirmation and unlike a lot of whites that I have seen. She has an excellent tail...not pinched as you see in the picture below.


Now my male is way to young to really know what is happening. I will add a picture once I can get a better pose.

Your chicks look like they are single comb and I would think are from a hatchery. I would say picture 3 and 4 are of a male and 2 looks like it cold be a female. Females tend to get their tails in faster than males from my experiences.

Chicken Junky - It's my contention that most hatcheries have need of a silver white, single comb bird for making Red Sex Links so they just sell excess stock from that white line and call them Rhode Island White, when of course, they are not. They do not have the rose comb, they do not have the proper brick shape body either. Nice birds and often good layers, but not RIW.

Rancher 3535 Those may some of the very best RIW I have seen. Of course, haven't seen very many due to their rarity. Outstanding.
