Where you see the blackthorn bushes is extended ground. When the hole for the house was dug out, the soil was tipped down that bank. I don't recall any blackthorn on that bank before so I have no idea where they came from.They are very pretty when in flower. Do the hens eat the fruit or do you harvest & use it? I believe you can make fake port wine from the sloes ~ & gin!I can't tell from the photo, were the blackthorns planted as hedging? I imagine they'd be rather a good predator proof hidey hole for your birds.
