Ribh's D'Coopage

It seems like I’m hearing about quite a few people losing chickens this week... well, my friend/neighbor who I gave Kathryn (my bully) to called to tell my she found her dead in the nest box today .. otherwise she was totally fine so we are both perplexed.. maybe egg bound ..

I'm sorry. I know she wasn't a good fit for your flock but she was a pretty girl & doing fine elsewhere. :(:hugs

What a magnificent moment.
Are those horizon clouds over the mainland? You seem to get them most days. And they look like ducks again :)
No. The clouds are over Minjeribah [otherwise known as Straddie] so more out to sea. Apart from having rain it's unusual to see so much cloud formation so constantly.

Also, I've been thinking about how best to house the flock as it expands. I'm planning to add two pullets every two years, so I end up with 10-15 birds. I can always skip a year or two if the flock gets too big.

I don't have time or skills to make my own coop. It's definitely a buy what I need situation. So, I spotted this option on the website you showed me, Ribh: https://www.backyardchickencoops.co...en-coops/products/the-mansion-coop-double-run maybe with the runs placed side by side. So I can segregate new birds as they arrive.

I have the space in the backyard, but I'd have to get council approval first because of the size. I like it because there's enough room for the chooks to roam when I'm not around to give them outside play time. I'd have to fox proof it, so I'm considering using galvanised mesh panels laid down and wired together, and then the coop placed on the mesh panels, so about a metre protrudes away from the coop and half a metre protrudes into the coop. Then I'll cover the mesh around the outside edges with mulch. The idea is that a fox would have to dig through the mulch before discovering the mesh is in the way.

What do you think? Can you see any risks?
Ok, I looked @ buying this coop. I liked the idea of the double run ~ so I looked @ reviews. :( Major bummer. Most people seemed very unhappy with the buy for 2 reasons: 1. the work. Every single piece needed 3 coats of paint before it could be put together & 2. it started to fall apart within 12 months. If you've read the coop discussions on here you know everyone advises NOT to buy prefab. And it's rather expensive.

Having said that I have a FB group [hardly ever on but the occasional goodie turns up] with some guy selling these:$1490~ He's in Brisbane & don't know about transport.https://www.facebook.com/rodney.tay...dti=1692941287436066&hc_location=group_dialog
He will put in a mesh floor too. I know it's a long way from you but might be worth asking OR ~ for the price of the first coop you could probably get a tradie to build exactly what you want. Might be worth it...?
