Hello everyone

A belated Happy New Year

I somehow lost this thread but will try to catch up. ( one of my new year's resolutions )

She's been a great asset to the tribe but she has really slowed down in the last month or so. She hasn't laid in nearly a year either. I don't want to lose her. She's invaluable in keeping the girls calm & on an even keel.

Soda is showing her age.
She is moving slowly & ponderously & barely eating any of the commercial feed.
She is first to roost & roosts early. She is runny @ the back end ~ not unusual for her & her weight still seems to be good.
She's always been a very big girl~ bigger & heavier than I thought was good for her.

She was a pushy youngster but has been a calm & benevolent flock leader.
Luna, Hepzibah & Ha'penny are excellent subordinates under her but are pretty hopeless leaders. Two don't want the position & Ha'penny is erratic. I'm not sure how much longer I will have her. I think she's coming up to 6 but may already be there. Freya is looking to take over but as she's something of a bully I'm not real keen on that idea. I have too many odd birds to have a bully in charge.​

Strange when one considers many kill their older hens because they no longer lay enough eggs.

I can see my old flexi is aging, bless her little grey head. Princess isn't which I find strange. Princess doesn't often lay eggs maybe that's why

She's tough. Our BRs really do seem to be hardy as their breed info says. Soda & her sister are my oldest birds from my very 1st buy.

That's so callous.
Princess hasn't laid an egg for months at a time, but she's healthy and a contented little soul, I've a feeling she will out live most of them.

Yes, I've had this argument a couple of times on BYC. I don't think it's changed any minds but when you consider my flock dynamics having a hen like Soda in charge makes a huge difference.

Don't give up trying to change minds. If only one person wakes up then that alone could save a few lives plus they may try to get the right message through too others
