@The-White-Elephant : I don't think you've missed too much. This yard has self shedding palms & I have spent most of this week piling the fallen fronds on the front lawn to be taken to the tip. Two truck loads!!!The gardener comes once a fortnight to mow but he just chucks the fronds on the garden. I hate that. It kills whatever is trying to grow there so I started cutting it all up & shoving it in the garbage bins ~ only they don't hold a lot. The landlord was doing a garbage run & offered to take our junk too. I don't think she was expecting what she got!

He knows that his girls are sorted, but yours obviously need a firm hand. He needs to herd them away from the crab pots!

Unfortunately [or perhaps fortunately] the crab pots are out of his line of vision!

There is a lot of predator coverage there. I bet they feel safe as much a anything.

It's interesting that you think that because I see it as being quite exposed. I expect you are right though. It must be like tunnelling into a bramble thicket or some such.

Oh I need to look more closely. I didn’t see the side holes.

Unless you know how a crab pot is constructed they are easy to miss. I think the camera zoomed in on one early in the video. I'll see if I can take a still for you.

Talking of Sif: She walked, without wing flapping to keep her balance, toes flat to the ground, from the shed to the patio this morning. She is resting now but throughout the day she will practice standing, balancing & walking as she gradually builds muscle tone again. I am so happy for her!

Sad news

I’m going to have River euthanised this morning. She seems to have developed wry neck and can’t hold her head up properly. I found her on the ground last night when I went to give her her meds, so I put her in the henhouse with her sisters. I was hoping she would die in the night, but she’s still alive, so I will call the vet in about 20 mins.

Sad news indeed. Nothing else to say really.

Ok, sooo… having said that,
I went and checked on River, who had got herself into the corner of the run. Her head was completely upside down, so I picked her up and put her on the grass. I lifted her head up so she was the right way up, she gets up, walks off and starts eating! I gave her some pellets and she ate those. I’ll take her to an avian vet this arvo and see what he thinks.

I don't want to promote false hope Lozzy but I've had a couple with what gets dumped under wry neck and they both recovered.

Dont feel guilty Lozzy. If the vet said that's it then it was probably overdue.

We seem to be having a spate of losses just now.
Last night I lost my sweet Hepzibah.
I have no idea. Two days ago I was admiring how healthy she looked, the vibrancy of her comb, the alertness of her eye & how she ran across the lawn like a chick.
This morning she was cold & stiff when I went to let the girls out.​

There was no indication anything was wrong @ all until late yesterday afternoon when she dropped this.

I know it was Hepzibah because I immediately began checking bums. She was a bit off for the rest of the afternoon & didn't eat before going to roost but after dropping something like that I wasn't surprised. Having panicked & immediately thought coccidia & I'd missed any symptoms I thought maybe intestinal shedding. The only tother time I've seen anything like that was Patricia & she went on to prolapse.

Meanwhile Sif & Soda are going from strength to strength. you just never know with chooks.​

There is coverage above and on the sides. It is very bush like. Without the camouflage the leaves on a bush would provide. My hens will use the leafless butterfly bushes in a similar fashion in the winter. You can see them but you can't reach them.
