It is always interesting to view one's flock through an outsider's eyes.
While I was away the man was responsible for my girls.
Time has made him reasonably confident with the cats but he has had less to do with the chooks. Never~the~less he agreed to feed & water them & collect the eggs, all of which he did remember.
I'm very aware of flock dynamics. Any change worries me but this is the 1st time I've been away from the flock over night & I've learnt a couple of things.
The girls are quite attached to me.
The 1st night apparently everyone accepted John with good grace & Lottie fed from his hand. By the 2nd night they were over him & no~one ate much & Lottie refused to have anything to do with him. Ditto night 3. No~one ate much @ all. He also thought they hadn't drunk much but with all the rain I think that unlikely. The tub would have overflowed & there are other sources in a big wet.
However Lottie was his biggest concern.
Like everyone else he is aware of how tiny she is compared to the standards but his surprised observation was how caring the big girls were of her! I'm aware of a good bit of jealousy where Lottie is concerned but it seems that when the chips are down the flock rallies round her.
When I got home I immediately opened the gate so they could escape the coop. Everyone hopped the fence ~ except Lavender who isn't all that bright & far to heavy for that sort of exercise! I'd gone inside to escape the drizzle & every girl was heading down the path looking for me. When I came to round them up there was a lot of squatting & running round in circles & obvious pleased relaxation when I scooped food into the tubs as usual & perched on the gate step to fed my bottom two. Things were back to normal!

Hubs and I visited his mum this morning and she gave me a box full of bib and bobs.
One of the things in it was a beautiful Pheasant brooch made with feathers. I thought my lovely chicken friends would appreciate it.

Sorry it's blurry, I didn't want to take it off.![]()
It is very flattering when I don't have any food with me!This is one of their best qualities, how much they seem to miss us. I am frankly addicted to the excitement that greats me everytime I step out onto the deck
Wow. That is spectacular.
As a sailor I consider forming bridges rather dangerous. The potential for disaster is enormous!Ah, the thrill of wild water!
As an engineer my objection to a lot of bridge building is it just makes it easier for the shite to get across. As a sailor I consider forming bridges rather dangerous. The potential for disaster is enormous!![]()
