Good evening folks

When YD was doing Band the music teacher wanted her to do Sax because her musical acumen was so high. She did flute instead but has since taught herself Sax basics. I think it was a good call. She has tactile issues & would have struggled with the reed. She didn't do clarinet for the same reason.

There was a time when I could play the flute, but a busted lip and 15 stitches later that was all over. On the reed front, I could pretty much play anything with a single reed, double reeded instruments freaked me out.

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?
I love my birds. I do everything in my power to give them the best environment, the best food, enough space & not too many flock mates & still too much stuff is going wrong! It is making me feel terrible. I should be doing better than this! Yet last night I noticed my sweet Alpia had a watery eye. This morning she had full blown bubbles.

I swabbed her eye with warm water with a little betadine diluted in it & immediately separated her from the rest of the flock ~ which did not make her happy @ all! She has been telling me about it all morning.

And boy! Did I get an earful!

She has food & water & some sun in the little coop & the 2nd swab I did, I did with a saline solution while giving her the once over in the Big Coop. Her eye is looking better but I am worried about MG. I have scheduled a vet appointment. She may be going to the mainland with us tomorrow or seeing the vet here on Thursday. I am hoping whatever it was I pulled of the lid was what has caused the problems but this is just the sweetest little hen ever. She is friendly, approachable, easily handled ~ not even a lot of squawking while I dabbed @ her eye! She deserves a long & healthy life ~ the best of everything. Instead I am watching her like a hawk for signs of respiratory illness. Any spare prayers for her health would be appreciated.

And yes, I posted in emergencies & diseases ~ only to have the MG suspicion confirmed. I've caught it early so hopefully that will make the difference.​

Jeannie, you're doing everything right. My first year with chickens, I had MG move through the flock. I treated them based upon the vet's recommendation and everyone pulled through just fine. I haven't had an issue since. It turns out that MG is quite common here.

On a side note, the vet I used is a BYC member who lives a couple hours from me. She doesn't do birds professionally, but has a large flock and tries to stay current on Avian medicine.

Oh, and I love your cold sunrise. I know cold sucks, but it is still beautiful. I imagine that the water makes the cold colder.

She came unstuck with violin on vibrato so reeds were never going to be a happening thing. Having that happen in her mouth....

Jeannie, you're doing everything right. My first year with chickens, I had MG move through the flock. I treated them based upon the vet's recommendation and everyone pulled through just fine. I haven't had an issue since. It turns out that MG is quite common here.

That makes me feel heaps better. I have some great chickens but most aren't super friendly. Alpia is.

Oh, and I love your cold sunrise. I know cold sucks, but it is still beautiful. I imagine that the water makes the cold colder.

Water cranks the cold factor up quite a lot.

When I was young, I used to love ice fishing. It was more playing than fishing though. We'd setup a tent on the ice, drill a bunch of holes to fish through, build a fire in the tent to stay warm and put our lines in the water. When the fish took the bait, a flag would pop up. Then all you had to do is pull it out and drop it in the bucket. It would be frozen solid before it landed in the bucket.
