Ribh's D'Coopage

Shadrach thinks this is an academic style paper that puts foreward an arguement for discussion. It's about culture more than a set in stone version of history. I don't know much about history and I haven't read the references sited.
I got sent the paper because we are having a discussion about the independence movement in Scotland. I'm against the seperation of Scotland from the UK. My objection has nothing to do with liking the way Scotland has been treated by the British Government.
My main objections are these.
Without the Scottish socialists the UK is destined to be run by the privilidged right wing of the Tory party for the forseeable future. The only way this can be changed is with the Scottish and Welsh socialist vote.
I'm not a fan of Nationalism. It seems to me to be divisive rather than inclusive. It usually ends up as not we are different but we are better than the other lot. I haven't seen any evidence to support this.
So, while I'm happy to have cultural roots, I favour a society that permits the expression of such roots in a boader system of government.
The paper goes some way to help support my view.
So based upon this, can I surmise your opinion on the Catalonia independence movement?

I don't think I can afford the chicken tax that might come with engaging in this debate. And I might end up being thrown off BYC which would make me sad.
That said, I have never understood what a forelock actually is and why tugging it would be 'a thing'.
To quote @featherhead007: I will show myself out now.
I don't think these are the politics they are worried about. Just saying.

In polite English society a gentleman might tip his hat to a person of social standing. It's more often seen in the movies as something men did for women.
The UK hasn't progressed an awful lot from a feudal system; squires and lairds, ladies and gentlemen, kinngs and queens, etc.
The peasant, not being able to afford a cap to tip when a peson of higher social standing was to engage him in some direction or other, would be expected to grab a lock of hair above his forehead and gently pull on it while making a slight bow. That lock of hair is the forelock and the tugging of it, well that should be obvious.

You can to a degree but the reasons are different.
Scotland despite the oil which they didn't see much of is relatively poor compared to the South of England. If it wasn't for national pride and harking back to the British Empire the South of England would probably be glad to see the back of them.
Catalonia is the bread basket of Spain. Apart from the historic bickerings and the civil war, the now wealthy Catalonia does not want to help support the Spanish poor.

So nationalism driven by greed. Nice. 🤬

Seriously Shad, are you suggesting this still goes on ?~ or just metaphorically speaking~ because I can't say I noticed any forelock tugging when I was there. Class consciousness, yes ~ or more so than here.

I'm not much of a fan of cosmopolitism because for me one of the joys of travelling has been the differences: different language, different social norms, different dress, different food, different culture & it has always been such fun to learn & make mistakes & see the world through different eyes ~ but I think I am very pragmatic when it comes to people. I don't ever expect someone to put the higher good above themselves ~ which would be necessary for your ideal world. And as I've already said I don't think you can separate history & culture. History is what we say about what the culture has done.

You'd have got on pretty well with my Poppy I think. He was very much of your mindset ~ apart from Scottish independence. He was all for getting rid of the English! :gig
