Ribh's D'Coopage

A large part of being able to handle them is because you got them so small. Its much easier if you start with younger hens. That's what I was trying to tell you when you got them. You have been a part of a much more important time in their development. You are not so scary as a result.
Yes, I was paying attention. I did listen. I promise. I'm just surprised by how big a difference it has made. Even the more skittish of the Littlies no longer run when I need to pick them up & though they protest loudly they make no real effort to escape.

Roosting seems to be our Waterloo.
I was really pleased to see Regan, who seems to be the leader in most things [though not all] made an attempt to lead everyone up the stairs to bed last night. Unfortunately for her, Patricia dropped a thin shelled egg from the roost just then & the flock erupted in their efforts to scoff the mess, then Soda lost her balance & plummeted like a cannonball... 🙄 My normally sedate older girls were behaving like the junior rugby mess hall & the Littlies lost their courage.

Olivia & Desdemona decided right underfoot was the safest place to be

I started with Regan because it was obvious she wanted to roost & was ready to go to bed, then added Portia & Glorianna. Regan & Gloriana are a tight pairing but they didn't get it right last night & there was a lot of neck twinning & heads up periscopeing as they each made sure the other was right there. They ended up deciding they didn't want to run the gauntlet of the nasty peckers & took the lowest roost.

My Little Frizzles were braver & refused to budge from the 2nd roost but I think the Biggies have the same problem as everybody else; they can't figure out which end is which so aren't sure where to peck. :gigDesdemona was happy to roost on the outside of them but Ceres opted to try for the top roost. Luna is always a safe bet & she shot into the tiny space between Luna & Beatha.

So this is how they were arranged when I left for the night...

This morning I was really pleased to see everyone had made it downstairs by the time I arrived, despite the curtain, & all is quiet on the Western Front.
