IT'S CATURDAY! 🫣
For @BDutch ~The chickens are not scared of the cat. The same cannot be said of the cat...🤣

Mine have succeeded in both scaring each others somehow. Yesterday the cat mistook one of the bantam for a bird and stalked it from behind....she ran as fast away as she could when she understood her mistake!
It's Friday morning here. But if my chickens dug to the other side of the world they would almost reach Chatham islands.
I've never seen these before. How interesting...🤔
My exact thought. I hate lukewarm coffee.
Is there a cat friendly way to stop her to hide somewhere in the run
Uh...not really. Your best bet would be to attract her elsewhere with catsnip or cat food. Cats like to do forbidden things.

Would bantam Vorwerk work too? I can’t have big chickens. But a Bantam size would fit great. Plan is to buy some fertilised eggs again in spring when I have a broody.
I don't think Vorwerks come bantam sized but they are a ferociously aggressive chicken. Any cat tangling with one would probably come off second best.

I was being a bit of a funny bunny suggesting Vorwerks. I was lucky. My hunter decided to take on a BR when my pullets first arrived & the smart girl stretched up her neck, spread her wings & fluffed everything that could be fluffed. She suddenly looked enormous & my lad skulked away fast. He's never stalked the chickens since, not even my bantams. Could you borrow a large standard for a day or 2 to scare the cat?

What is catsnip?
I certainly won’t give her food. The owner hates it when people do that. She overeats and is too much from home of neighbours do so.

They do exist in the Netherlands for sure.
They are on my list I made two years ago of maybe-want-to-have bantams. Then I finally choose bantam RIR. This year maybe more Dutch or bantam Vorwerk. Or maybe 🤔 bantam RIR again.

I'm surprised the RIR haven't put the cat in it's place. 🤔

Nepeta cataria, commonly known as catnip, catswort, catwort, and catmint, is a species of the genus Nepeta in the family Lamiaceae (a mint I think) ~ most cats love it.

Now that's interesting to know! I have had a lot of trouble with my Vorwerks ~ mostly neurological issues. One of mine went lame for months & though she eventually recovered she was always a bit unsteady on her feet. I had another one go down last week. Massive dose of vitamins & antibiotic & she was right as rain in the morning. Your gene pool will be much better than ours though.

Nice idea but: No, I don’t want a big rooster with my bantams. They are just too heavily shaped for the tiny bantam hen bodies.

And in my opinion its never worth the risk to add a temporary newcomer with possible diseases in my flock. I think its forbidden too nowadays, because we have serious HPAI restrictions.

A cat in the run is no big problem, just a nuisance for the chickens and little songbirds that visit the run too.

Ooh. :hugs
Sorry for your losses.

Btw, my RIR is bantam too. And I have an adress where I can buy fertilised eggs. 😁
