Right bird for me

I vote Quaker parakeet. I had one myself. He was very needy for attention, though, and that posed a problem after I started working part time while going to school, so you might keep it in mind. He was a pretty good talker.

Ah, this was one of the first birds I looked in to.
And then I learned they're illegal to keep here in California.
Remember to check your state's restrictions on animals!

They're legal in my state, but some states consider them an invasive species. They are voracious eaters and can destroy crops. True story!

I've just been hand rearing some cockatiels for a breeder. The kids and I have fallen in love with them and we've kept four! They are very sweet.

I'd recommend a hand reared bird as the hard work is done - your new baby would just have to get used to you which doesn't take long. They need about 2 hours of your time daily but most of that is them sitting on your shoulder preening your hair and asking for head scratches. As long as they have toys to play with in their cage that are regularly changed so they don't get bored and some of your attention they are happy birds. Some people leave the radio or tv on for them during the day if no one is home.

Hello,
Birds can be great pets if you read and study up on the type of bird you are interested in and honestly talk to folks who own different kinds of birds, ask these bird owners what is positive and what is negative about owning the type of bird they have. Some birds are extreamly smart and some parrots live a very long time. If you decide to get a bird from a breeder, a pet shop or a rescue organization realize that these animals are thinking and feeling beings. Parrots can be very moody creatures, loving you one moment and not liking you the next. Birds are messy, so if you don't want to clean around a bird's cage everyday don't get a bird. Some people can't handle the noise that birds make, I think it's beautiful when my macaw clucks and screams, because healthy birds make noise. A great book to read is "All about the Parrots" by Arthur Freud.
Good luck to you.
