RIP chicken thread

Just lost my Eloise yesterday . She had ascites and laying issues before that (possibly peritonitis). My mum and I attempted draining off some fluid yesterday, but I think the stress of trying to hold her still might have been too much. She went into respiratory failure - it sounded like she got fluid in her lungs - and died less than five minutes later . I should have tried draining her a week or more ago, but she always seemed in good spirits and I didn’t want to make anything worse. At least she ended up going pretty quick and I was with her .

Oh no! I'm so sorry. It's hard when a chicken dies like that. It isn't your fault that it happened. You did your best.

She’s beautiful. Don’t you dare think like that it’s not your fault she was sick. You loved her till the end and she knew it. That’s the best you could have done for her ever! She should always be remembered like that (by what you did for her) and never ever by “what could have been done”. There is never any guarantee and this was most definitely not your fault!

I agree with that 100 percent. Too many people blame themselves for their pet's death. No shoulda, coulda, wouldas allowed. Never blame yourself!

@JustBabyMargo and @the_peanut_coop, you guys are the best . It’s really hard not to feel guilty, but you are right. I just hope that from this I can learn not to be afraid to treat any future chickens earlier if I suspect fluid buildup. My goal is to one day be decently proficient at treating common illnesses at home. I always tell people the only bad thing about chickens is that they are prey animals and are sometimes delicate. I hope everyone on this thread can find peace and hope for their own flock. Oh, to love - and be loved by - a chicken! There is nothing quite like it .

Chickens have faces. And they are different.

Of course. Clover had little specks of black on her head and deeper set eyes, but it’s like child vs. parent. Very similar features, makes it hard some days.

@JustBabyMargo and @the_peanut_coop, you guys are the best . It’s really hard not to feel guilty, but you are right. I just hope that from this I can learn not to be afraid to treat any future chickens earlier if I suspect fluid buildup. My goal is to one day be decently proficient at treating common illnesses at home. I always tell people the only bad thing about chickens is that they are prey animals and are sometimes delicate. I hope everyone on this thread can find peace and hope for their own flock. Oh, to love - and be loved by - a chicken! There is nothing quite like it .

I lost my Easter Egger and Australorp within a month of each other from different diseases. My EE had to be put down as she had wet fowl pox and my Australorp had Marek’s. We thought about keeping the Australorp in quarantine to see if she would recover because she began eating a bit on her own again, but she just couldn’t walk and she was covered in bugs and looked miserable. It really sucked, and luckily it’s been awhile and none of the other hens have showed signs of Marek’s, but I’m really attached to all of my birds so both diseases hitting at once was terrible luck

The nice thing is you gave her a great life while you had her and that's all we can do. I'm so sorry.

That’s too bad But you did the right thing and put them out of their pain.

Lost my Mahalia back in January. https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/keyword-in-moderation.76335/ She was a sweet little dork.

Almost lost my favorite hen Peebles to a possum a couple weeks back.

Thank God I got outside fast enough. She didn't make it into the coop before the Autodoor shut and a possum took his chances. He ripped out almost all of her crop feathers and some tail feathers, but she was okay.
