As some here know, I raised orphaned opossum babies. I had a boy and a girl named Diamond and Topaz. Topaz was the male. He had issues from day 1. He was the smallest and weakest, the last one out of his momma's pouch (we actually found him several hours after the first ones....I just had a bad feeling there might be one left and went back)and I guess the runt. He ended up crippled in his back legs which I heard was from nutrition problems but none of the others had any problems at all. One male left (was made wild) long ago. My mother has a female, and my Uncle has kept these two for me for several months. Anyway, he had them outside today for awhile. They were playing and acting normal, no issues at all. He was doing something and not watching them for a few minutes. When he turned to look at them, Topaz way lying on the ground not breathing. He picked him up and tried to revive him but he was gone. We have no idea what could have happened, he was acting fine before that. He was two years old and will be terribly missed. I know how many of you feel about opossums, but these guys were loved little babies.
RIP Topaz, we will all miss you.
