Amber Sex Link Chickens
Other name(s): Amber Link Chicken; Amber Hybrid Chicken; Amber Star Chicken; Amber Lee Chicken; Dekalb Amberlink
Scientific name: Gallus gallus domesticus
Country / Place of origin: Not known
History: Amber Sex Link Chickens are created by crossing a Rhode Island Red Chicken and a white Plymouth Rock Chicken. A cross breed, or "hybrid" chicken is created by crossing two different chicken breeds. Modern hybrids are typically created for their high egg laying ability or egg color. Modern hybrids are often vaccinated against Mareks and Infectious Bronchitis (IB) which rarely, if ever occurs with traditional / heritage breeds as vaccinating small numbers is expensive. Many breeds of cross-bred chickens exist, but none breed true or are recognized by poultry breed standards. Names vary, as breeders often name their sex link chickens.
Current Uses: Egg production - up to 320 tinted brown eggs per year. The number of eggs laid will typically start to drop after the first season. Amber Links are very adaptive to non-cage operation, forage well, and have excellent feather retention.
Appearance: Amber Sex Link Chickens are white birds with brown flecking. There is a wide variation in the shades of browns, ranging from chocolate to amber.
