Hi Bob,
Thanks for the explanation. So, the Heritage breed of RIR LF are the darker birds, and my bright red is the newer, production-oriented version? Aha. Well, she certainly does great on the egg laying, I have to say. And her pretty, medium brown, medium-sized eggs are the ones I count on, along with my Brahma, who is also a stellar layer. Fiona is just smarter than the other hens. She figures out any situation about 3x faster than any of the others, and is really inquisitive. Are these typical traits of RIR's? She is a good lead hen and doesn't fight with the others or reprimand unnecessarily, and as I said, now she even is good with the other hen's babies. She is not aggressive with me, and seems to like to hang out with me if i am out puttering around in the orchard or garden. (Either I am the "watch rooster", as I have none, or for possible treats, no doubt.) Thus far she has not gone broody like the Cochins, and she will be a year old in March.

I really enjoy her. But now I am glad to know more about the breed as a whole!

Best,
Dawn

i have 4 of the hatchery reds like yours.they are the friendliest little things.i have almost injured one of the girls several times because whenever i am in the garden she is usually under the hoe or shovel waiting for worms.mine are 2 this spring and out of 4,only one goes broody.love them:love

I just went to the feed store a couple days ago...and came home with 6 new RIR babies!

They really are cute and fun to watch, and I think that from what I've read on BYC, they should make a lovely little addition to my flock! (Unless of course...they all turn out to be roos.

This has happened to be before...10 'pullets' quickly turned into 10 cockerals!)

So, my hen, Fiona, lays a brown egg, and I never thought about the color until my Welsummer started laying and Fiona's egg is just as dark. (Or Wellie egg is light...?) I would just call it a medium brown egg. What is normal? Or, what is the breed standard?

Fiona's egg is the top one...

They look nice but, the two things I see off hand that you will have to work on is the feathers right before the tail there relay frayed, both the rooster and the hen have it but the hen shows it the most.
It my be condition but I think it also has a lot to do with Genetics and some of the feed (to much protein and not enough fat/ oil in there feed).
The other thing I see that need work is tail angle both look very flat. The tail of a Red should be Males 20° and Females 10°.
Also watch the Wings they should be held parallel with the back .
Other than that there not bad.

This is what you are working too.
