RIR Breed Thread

Here are my babies at a few days old.

Here's a pic of some of my girls at 5 months. About the time they started laying well.

Here's one of the huge eggs I got from one of my RIR gals (I have 7 RIRs as well as many other breeds). Her's is on the left. You can see 2 other RIR eggs in the pic that are normal size. The tiny one in the middle is a first egg from an RIR pullet. She lays normal, beautiful golden brown eggs now.

I love my RIRs! They are the most consistent layers I have and their eggs are a beautiful size and color. They are very calm, relaxed birds!

I too have 3 RIR's. Seeing the "official" breed specs is really interesting, so thanks to that person!

To the people who are looking to the breed to start their "chicken days", go for it, they are robust and commical in nature, i got into keeping chickens because my friend suggested it would be fun and rewarding, if i knew how fun and rewarding it is, i would have done it years ago. They prevent the need for pesticides to keep out slugs and snails, they prevent the need for fertilizers for my vegetables and they produce hormone free, organic eggs really for a fraction of the price you can buy them at the store!

I NEVER EVER thought i would be a weird chicken person, but hey i am now a fully paid, certified card carrying, pin wearing chicken maniac. I eat my breakfast with them in the yard in the morning and watch them interact with my beagle, i watch them protect the bantam from the neighbors cat and generally run amok in my yard! They are cheeky and mischivious and always looking for a treat!

I am sure all people love "their" breeds more than the next but as an all round, fun, low maintainance, high output bird to teach your kids about caring for animals and then the "reward" that comes in collecting the eggs in the morning, i am sure there is no better breed!

We started off with RIRs-6 of them. Of course they were hatchery stock...but awesome none the less! My hubby still misses his one 'baby' out of the group!

He really wants to get a couple RIR bantams...I keep TRYING but I get outbid on ebay and no one else seems to have them!!! Anyone out there know of anyone who has bantam RIRs and would be willing to sell me a couple hatching eggs?! (I've been on this mission for over 6 weeks now...still no luck!!!)

They really are awesome birds...very intelligent and VERY personable. We did have ONE roo who was kinda 'nasty'...but the other was my hubby's BEST FRIEND! (Slept on his lap...sat on his shoulder as my hubby would go about his 'house stuff'...you know...MANLY things!)

Please...if any of you know anyone with bantams...please let me know! thanks!

Dick Horstmen has some and did real well with them at Ohio Nationals about a year or two ago. (he is here on BYC go's by the user name dickhorstmen)
I believe he gets around $15.00 a dozen for hatching eggs.
