About 16 weeks ago I got 8 chicks. One of my welsummers is defiantly a rooster, no question asked, but now I'm looking at my rhode island red and thinking I might have another on my hands.
Rose is developing green tail feathers (some very bright) and dark, almost black neck feathers.
Now my neighbor has 10 RIR hens and none of them have this green so Imuch getting concerned I might have another male.
Rose is fairly large already and even challenges the one I know is a rooster.
So, is she a he or just a dominant female?

At 4 months of age I would expect a lot more obviously male traits. Like a much larger comb and well defined saddle feathers. I'm more inclined to say its a pullet and nearing point of lay. She will very likely molt out those longer tail feathers. Its not unheard of for pullets to get longer "male" tail feather and molt them out or not. But pullets won't get the long, thin, pointed saddle feathers. And I'm not seeing any on this bird.

Thanks guys! My flocks to small to house more then one rooster so I'm hoping it's a she. I'll probably hold off a couple weeks and see if any more defined male traits start showing up or not.
This is my first flock and he/she is defiantly at the top of the order. Even above my known welsummer rooster.

So here is a closers view of the side of the RIR in question. These look like pointed saddle feathers to me but, again, I've never dealt with reds and the lack of all the bright flashy colors (like on my welsummer when he was changing) is kinda throwing me off.
