RIR Roo Question

Quote:
I got my RIR Roo at 2 months, never hand fed, never tried to make him tame, and he has never been mean. I can even pick up his girls by him and he does nothing. I do not find RIR mean in the least. Now, my Hamburg Rooster is a different story, VERY aggressive!

I've had RIR roosters in the past and they were the tamest of my bunch of birds. I had my worst encounters with my first rooster an overly aggressive Light Brahma, I had partridge and red cochin bantams that had super long spurs that attacked my mother when she went out to feed and water them. Right now I have a RIR rooster I got from a straight run pick from TSC and he is very calm and even affecitionate toward me. He doesn't like to be picked up but loves to be petted.

We have 2 RIR roos in with our RIR hens(22) and they are very gentle and nice and you can let them out with other roos and they do not try to kill each other. On the other hand our Ameraucana Rooster is mean to other Roosters. I forgot one day on Rooster day and he Killed my beautiful Pheonix. We do hen day were all breeds of hens get to roam the farm and then Rooster day were all the Roosters get to roam. I will never let him out again with anything other than his hens. All the other of our Roosters just go do their thing finding bugs and such. But the Ameraucana Rooster stays in until Breed day were all the seperate Breeds get to be out for the day.
Anyway I think RIRs are very gentle Roos at least the ones we have owned. I refuse to own a mean animal...they get sold or ;(

I've owned some mean RIR roos (and have relatives who have also owned some), and they're no picnic. Not all RIR roos are mean, but the breed has more than its fair share.

I'd say handling nice birds makes them more comfortable around you. Handling mean ones does the same thing, but not in the same way

You can try to handle him; if he's nice, it'll do wonders. If he's on the borderline (that is, just a little full of himself), it might help--but if he's aggressive, IMO, in the end, the blood will tell.

it depends on how you handle mean roos... hitting them or something like that because they are comming after you is a bad idea because it makes them meaner. but if i were you just keep handling him and he shouldnt be agressive.

my rir roo is great with the hens, lucky for him,he came after me and my boy a few times, and those spurs are getting sharp so he better watch it in the future,
Ive got a black australorp roo thats pretty fiesty also, the orps and barred rocks like to be picked up and hand fed all the time

I have had four different RIR Roos and SC and RC. I have not had a aggressive one. I have never spent a lot time handlling them. Some of it is genetic traits i believe. I catch my roos to worm them and all the girls and he never has attacked me. If i had one that was agressive I would never keep him for breeding.
