I, personally would never recommend RiR's for someone new to chickens, they are too temperamental and yes, I am one of those with the experience of "they are the meanest birds short of OEGB's" Although, to be fair, I had 3, one turned out to be a rooster and he was the sweetest rooster you could imagine. He loved riding around on my shoulder lol, the girls though....ganged up on one of my PBR's and ripped her comb clean off her head. it was a blood bath in that coop before I could stop it. That is my experience and my promise to never have another RiR as long as I live. If I were you, I would do some research, hear other people's experiences and make an informed decision of your own. If it were me, I would go for wyandottes. They aren't the sweetest birds and also not the meanest but they are tough, hardy and good layers.
