River sand in run, is this the right stuff?

Hi everyone,

I have done a lot of research about what to lay down for the base of the run/coop. I have decided to go with river sand, but after doing some local research, I have come across different types of river sand. I just have a few questions:

1.) Would anyone currently using river sand be able to confirm the below picture is actually what it is supposed to be or should it be a little finer? It's hard to tell but the stones are pretty small (sorry should have used something for comparison).

2.) I am located in California (north bay area), and curious if I should put drainage rocks under the sand or if it is even necessary at all since we don't get crazy amounts of rain? Also would love to hear what others have used under the sand. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks so much and look forward to hearing from you guys and getting my girls out of their brooder box!

I'd never use sand. Use wood shavings, much lighter and easier to clean, plus you can compost it. What do you do with a coop full of wet, poopy sand? Just my opinion.

Agrees.

Most folks who use sand as bedding sift the poops out daily, those pebbles in top pic will just get sifted out. And those pebbles are not necessarily adequate/ideal grit material. http://www.jupefeeds-sa.com/documents/GraniteGrit.pdf.

If you have drainage issues, sand/gravel is rarely the answer.
Ramial wood chippings mixed with other dry vegetative matter is the best for keeping odors in check...basically a cold compost, the poops 'disappear' pretty quickly, depending on litter depth and population density.
