We homeschool also. How about the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetville, WV. It's the highest vehicular bridge in the US and the second highest in the world.
The annual festival is coming up this month where they base jump from the bridge.

Oh, yeah! When I was much younger and much more adventurous, I decided to head to Alaska because I had heard you could see Russia from there. I never did make it all the way to Alaska, I got waylaid in Canada (a very long story) but for Alaska you may want to do Little Diomede Island, which is two and a half miles from Big Diomede Island which is in Russia... Across the international date-line!

Here's a webcam of the island http://www.webcamsk.com/index.php?option=com_bookmarks&task=detail&id=201
not
much to look at right today.

Here's a National Geographic picture:

We just rafted there in August LOL

As far as the homeschool- I have pictures and info on Washington DC, Gettysburg, Ft. Sumter, Savannah, Charleston, Ft.Bragg, Airborne Museum- what you want that I can send you? I could keep going- I LOVE to travel!

The pics are fantastic!!! there is also a website where you can take virutal tours of most places ... can't remmeber the link at the moment, but I have used it in the past... it was fantastic ... even climbed Mt Everest! .. been around the Vatican... St Peters Sq in Russia... Venice.... so I think the children would really enjoy that site also.

You should download Google Earth; you can see ALL the landmarks around the world and all the pictures people have taken that are posted on the site. It is VERY cool! I have taken my kids to the Pyramids, Eiffel Tower, Great Wall,.... it is so amazing! And looking at stuff from space you really get a good idea how BIG some of these structures are!

Have fun! I supplement my kids education myself, so this is something I am into.
